The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the largest government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong in terms of student number.  It offers programmes at Doctorate, Master’s, Bachelor’s degrees and Higher Diploma levels.  It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,200.  The total consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$4 billion per year.

DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE AND BILINGUAL STUDIES

Assistant Professor in Chinese Language Education

The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is strong in Applied Language Studies.  It offers bachelor, master, and doctoral programmes in Translating & Interpreting, Bilingual Corporate Communication, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, and Teaching Chinese as a second language.  The Department has a total of 70 academic staff members.  Please visit the website at http://www.cbs.polyu.edu.hk for more information about the Department.

The appointee will be required to (a) assist the Director in the forward planning of the CLC in terms of new course development and other academic and scholarly initiatives, including but not limited to the planning of the 4-year curriculum; (b) manage all activities associated with teaching, curriculum design, development of teaching materials and assessment; (c) ensure the quality and relevance of the CLC’s teaching activities; (d) engage in teaching and learning activities; (e) facilitate collaboration with other departments; (f) conduct research and scholarly activities; and (g) take part in the CLC’s administration and consultancy; and undertake professional service to external bodies and public service to the community.

Applicants should (a) have a PhD degree in the field of Chinese Language and Literature or Applied Linguistics in relation to Chinese Language pedagogy, plus substantial years of teaching in a relevant academic discipline; (b) possess one area of expertise in Chinese Language studies, Chinese Language teaching and learning, or related disciplines; (c) have good track record in language education research contributing to curriculum design and development with sound underlying theories; (d) have an extensive and successful academic record in teaching, scholarship and curriculum development; (e) have evidence of successful academic leadership and sound administrative experience including organizational management and financial planning; (f) have excellent command of Putonghua and written Chinese, and high standard of English (both written and spoken); (g) be capable of contributing to issues and initiatives at Department, Faculty and University level; and (h) have made contributions in professional service to the community.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service
Salary offered will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.  Remuneration package will be highly competitive.  Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.

Lecturer in Chinese

The appointee will be required to (a) engage in teaching Chinese language/Chinese literature courses at tertiary level; (b) co-ordinate Chinese language teaching and contribute to the curriculum planning, subject development and learning materials for courses in fulfilling the language requirements of the 4-year curriculum; (c) engage in scholarly activities and pedagogical exploration in relation to Chinese language education and Chinese language/literature; and (d) undertake administrative duties in academic and departmental affairs and take up an active role in programme management for the further development of the Department’s objectives.

Applicants should (a) have a relevant PhD degree in Chinese Language and Literature or in areas relevant to Chinese Language pedagogy; (b) have at least two years’ teaching experience in Chinese courses at tertiary level; (c) be able to  collaborate with relevant departments at PolyU and other institutions in developing IT platforms for teaching purposes; (d) have excellent command of Putonghua (at least B2 level in Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi [PSC] or equivalent) and written Chinese, and high standard of English (both written and spoken); and (e) have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and professional service.  Preference may be given to those who specialize in Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) and are able to use English as a medium of instruction.

Head of Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies

The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is situated within the Faculty of Humanities and is strong in linguistics and translation studies in the Chinese and multilingual context in Asia.  The Department offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programmes.  The Department has the following four main areas of study: Bilingual Studies, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Studies and Education, and Translation.  Japanese Language Studies and Korean Language Studies are also part of the Department’s portfolio.  The Department’s mission is to produce preferred graduates who have high levels of biliteracy and trilingual abilities and to conduct applied research of Chinese in a bilingual context as well as bilingualism in a Chinese context, incorporating theoretical perspectives and new methodologies.  The Department hosts three support units:  a Centre for Translation Studies, a Language Testing Unit, and a Chinese Language Centre which provides training in Chinese language for students across the whole university.  The Department also co-hosts the PolyU – Peking U Research Centre on Chinese Linguistics.  The Department has a total of 68 academic staff members.  The medium of instruction is English.  Please visit the website at http://www.cbs.polyu.edu.hk for more information about the Department.

The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of Head of Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies.  The successful candidate will be appointed as Chair Professor or Professor, commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience, and hold a concurrent headship appointment.  The Headship appointment is normally for an aggregate period of six years in two three-year terms of office.

The position calls for an academic leader with responsibilities of ensuring the smooth and successful operation and sustainable development of the Department. Reporting directly to the Dean of Faculty of Humanities, the appointee will be required to provide effective leadership in the development of long-term strategies and plans of the Department, and provide support to staff members in the Department for the accomplishment of strategic objectives with high quality standards. Other responsibilities include inspiring excellence in teaching, research and services; fostering strong partnerships and collaborations with external organizations and strengthening the international network of the Department and the University; ensuring optimal deployment of human, financial and other resources in the Department; and implementing an effective mechanism to acquire donations and other forms of sponsorship to support the University’s pursuits and long-term development.

Applicants should have (a) an outstanding academic track record and a doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline and high level of bilingualism in English and Chinese, with knowledge of Korean and/or Japanese being an advantage; (b) attained of an academic rank of full professor or above at an internationally recognized university; (c) an international reputation in research and scholarship in any two of the four main areas of the Department (Bilingual Studies, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Studies and Education, and Translation); (d) a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and a strong record in attracting research funding; (e) a global perspective, strong leadership and administrations skills as well as the demonstrated ability to build up a strong team of academic staff with different research and cultural backgrounds and to promote collaboration across departments and institutions; and (f) good knowledge of the higher educational environment, preferably including that in Hong Kong.  Experience in fund-raising will be an additional advantage.
