BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
VISITING INSTRUCTOR OR PROFESSOR OF CHINESE

The Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at Brigham Young University invites applications for a position (all ranks) in Chinese, pending administrative and budgetary approval, beginning Fall 2011. Applicants should be able to teach courses in advanced Chinese language and literature and have in hand or be near completing a Ph.D. in Chinese language, literature or a related field. Duties include teaching and supervising advanced language, literature and culture classes; performing research (area of expertise open); materials development and assessment. The candidate must have proven commitment to undergraduate language and literature instruction. Experience teaching advanced Chinese language courses at the college level is preferred.

The Department of East Asian Studies invites applications for Chinese language lecturer positions that may become available beginning September 2011. We seek candidates with backgrounds in disciplines such as Chinese linguistics, literature, history, or foreign language teaching. Applications should include a cover letter and curriculum vitae. A writing sample is optional (e.g., a dissertation chapter). Reference letters will be requested after a telephone interview.

Requirements include native or near-native fluency in Chinese; teaching experience; and Ph.D., ABD, or M.A. in Chinese linguistics, literature, history or relevant discipline. The review of applications will begin in late October 2010. Preliminary interviews will be held at CLTA and AAS conferences.

CHINESE LANGUAGE, URSINUS COLLEGE, COLLEGEVILLE, PA

The Department of Modern Languages at Ursinus College invites applications for a three-year renewable full-time position in Chinese language, to begin August 2011. Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or higher in a related discipline, including such fields as Chinese pedagogy, applied linguistics, or second language acquisition, and must demonstrate expertise in teaching Chinese at the college level. Native or near-native fluency in both Mandarin Chinese and English is required. The successful candidate will teach Chinese language courses at all levels; offer independent study courses, including advanced grammar and pedagogy, as required; and participate in service activities for the Department, including student advising, and the Chinese language program, including coordinating the Chinese language table and assisting with the study abroad program. Ursinus has an established major in East Asian Studies, and is in the process of developing a Chinese language program. Candidates should be committed to excellence in teaching in a liberal arts setting. The teaching load is three courses per semester.
