Martin Everaert
Martin Everaert is Professor of Linguistic and
director of the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS. He works
primarily on the syntax-semantics interface (anaphora: reflexives,
reciprocals), and the lexicon-syntax interface
(idioms/collocations, and argument structure).
His books include The Blackwell Companion to
Syntax, I-V, Blackwell (co-edited with Henk van Riemsdijk, 2006),
The Unaccusativity Puzzle: Explorations of the Syntax-Lexicon
Interface, Cambridge University Press (co-edited with A. Alexiadou
and E. Anagnostopoulou, 2004), Idioms: Structural and Psychological
Perspectives, Lawrence Erlbaum Ass. (co-edited with E. van der
Linden, A. Schenk, and R. Schreuder, 1995).
He is, among others, on the editorial boards of Linguistic Inquiry
(MIT Press) and the Journal of Comparative Germanic Linguistics
(Springer).
Course
Description: In this course, linguistic
variation across human languages is studied from two comparative
perspectives, a macro-comparative (‘typology’) and a
micro-comparative perspective (‘dialectology’), with a strong focus
on the former, typology.
Students are introduced into the field of
language typology/macro variation, the systematic study of the
similarities and differences between the world’s more than 6000
natural languages. It searches for universal properties or
systematic patterns of variation in morphological or syntactic
aspects of languages, and to classify variation along genetic,
areal or structural lines. In the study of micro variation one
focuses on the study of language systems that are very similar,
such as closely related languages, or dialects of the same
language.
Human languages appear on the surface to be very
different from one another. But closer examination reveals that
languages also share fundamental properties, and differ in
systematic ways. In this course we will identify and study some of
these universal properties of language, and how we can approach the
problem of language diversity. We will explore possible reasons for
the existence of language types and linguistic universals.
Methods of explanation in cross-linguistic
research will be discussed, and the way a database of structural
(phonological, grammatical, lexical) properties of languages can be
gathered, and the problems that we are confronted with in doing so
will be solved.
Xu Daming
Xu Daming is Professor of Linguistics, School of Liberal Arts,
Nanjing University. He is both the director of the China Center for
Linguistic and Strategic Studies and the Sociolinguistics
Laboratory of Nanjing University. His research mainly focuses on
sociolinguistics and language planning.
Course
Description: This lecture is made up of three mini-lectures:
Speech Community Theory, Urban Language Survey and Language
Economics. Speech Community Theory is to explain the communitarian
nature of language. Urban Language Survey responds to the changing
empirical basis of linguistics due to modernization. Language
Economics provides tools of analysis for economic values of
language and for effectiveness of language planning. The three
mini-lectures emphasize theory, empiricism and application
respectively but are all mutually referable and supportive.
Wang Hsu (H. Samuel Wang)
Wang Hsu is Professor of English and Linguistics at the Department
of Foreign Languages and Linguistics, Yuan Ze University, Taiwan.
He is currently the chairperson of the department. His main
research interest is experimental phonology.
Course
Description: The lecture will introduce the audience to the
rationale of doing experiments in linguistics, particularly
phonology. We will explain why linguistic theories need to be
experimentally validated. In the tutorial we will discuss the
experimental paradigms that have been used and what kinds of
insights they have revealed.
Hans Van de Velde
Hans Van de Velde is Lecturer in Sociolinguistics at Utrecht
University, where he teaches courses in sociolinguistics, language
variation and change, language contact, multilingualism, research
methodology in linguistics, and language policy and planning. His
research mainly focuses on phonetic variation and change and the
patterns of convergence and divergence in the Dutch language
area.
He is also the coordinator of the network on
Industrialization, Language Contact and Identity Formation in China
and Europe.
Course
Description: In this seminar he will briefly
introduce the construction, administration and processing of
questionnaires in sociolinguistic research. Special attention will
be paid to the advantages and disadvantages of the use of the
Internet for data collection.
James Anthony Walker
James Walker is Associate Professor of
Linguistics, Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics
of York University. He is Associate Editor of Language Variation
and Change, Member in Editorial Board of Canadian Journal of
Linguistics. He teaches the following courses: Sociolinguistics:
Language Variation and Change, Bilingualism: A Sociolinguistic
Approach, Canadian English, Research in Sociolinguistic Variation
and Change.
Course Description: This lecture offers an introduction to
and overview of the analysis of linguistic variation and change,
with a specific focus on the conditioning of variation by
language-internal factors. Examples are drawn
from a variety of phonological and grammatical variables in English
and other languages. Some attention is given to
the application of the variationist method to linguistic
theory.
