Mandarin Chinese Language Director and Assistant Language Director positions available.

Current experienced language educators and/or administrators
Location: Massachusetts or Vermont
Program duration: June 20 - July 27, 2009

Language Directors are part of a community that creates an intensive four-week immersion program for middle and high school students each summer. Located on two college campuses, MMLA offers students the opportunity to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French or Spanish with skilled language educators. Language Directors are senior administrators that work in close consultation with the Academic Director to implement and appropriately adapt the MMLA curriculum, guidelines, and policies. They lead a team of experienced educators and Residential Advisors to create a unique immersion academic program.

MMLA follows the traditions and success of the Middlebury College immersion programs and the Monterey Institute of International Studies curriculum development expertise. All staff and students adopt the Middlebury Language Pledge©, modified as needed for the student age group and language level, so that a full-immersion environment is created. Before the summer begins, Language Directors participate in a mid-winter training session and on-going conference calls to take part in the planning for the summer. They also work with the Academic Director to hire all language faculty and residential advisors.

Language Directors are charged to create a positive learning environment that is diverse in activities and experiences. They are in charge of all programmatic events that occur in their academies. They are enthusiastic and supportive individuals who can appropriately task their teams to plan and implement academic and non-academic daily activities for students. They are proactive individuals that can troubleshoot and work well with others to solve problems, always with goal to maintain a high quality language summer program. They ensure that their language teams are following MMLA curriculum, policies and guidelines. The Language Director leads pre-camp training for all academic matters within their language.

Assistant Language Directors support the Language Director with all of the aforementioned responsibilities and also have teaching obligations.

We seek: Assistant Language Directors should command a high degree of spoken and written proficiency in Mandarin Chinese; they should have extensive experienced working with middle or high school students; and should have leadership experience. This is a residential position. All employees will be provided room and board and will have scheduled time off each day and week. All employees pay for their travel to and from program locations.
