Round 3 &4: How to Test a Racing Car & First Bump

(2006-02-13 00:23:20)
分类: Stories in English

Rain has been kept showing down since the beginning of the race week. We tried to start testing our Lotus from Monday, but heavy rains stop the testing sessions frequently. We put on road tires since the track is very damp. But still, the tires kept making noise when I brake, and the tail of the Lotus slide around.

2’15. Much slower than driving on a dry surface. I feel the gas is not steady. Sometimes I could not feel it when I put it on, sometimes it comes all of sudden. Alan said the gas would not be steady if rpm is under 4000 because of the adjustment. When the track is not so wet, I did 2’07. Then the showers pour down.

In the next day’s testing, I kept spin on the track. I feel my Lotus slide around whenever I brake. There is a huge power forced on my steering when braking. The force turns the steering to the left and right in the middle of a braking, and finally leads to the left. Every time after braking, I have to hold the steering very tight to control the movement of the car. Once, I tried not to fight with the force, and I did not hold the wheel tight. The car span to the right then left side immediately with the force on the steering. The strange force occurred at each time of braking before a slow corner. I stopped testing because I could not trust the car any more. I am totally confused and do not know what is happening, but only explain what I felt to Alan.

No idea if it is because the continuous rain, I caught a cold and get seriously sick. I could hardly sleep at night times. I wonder why I have to go to hospital every time before a race.

Thursday, Alan asked Philipe, a former F3 driver who is an instructor in Zhuhai, to test the car during a break of heavy rains. Meanwhile, Alan changed the setup into wet surface setup.

Philipe tried the car for around 4 laps and then drove back to the pit. He told Alan the car is very dangerous as soon as he jumped out of the car. He said the handling is terrible and the car is seriously over steering. He emphasized that even a very experienced driver who knows about the track so well can result a crash.

Over steer! That is the key point of the problem. I have been trying to tell Alan about my feeling of the car; we discussed problems of braking, tires, wet surface. But the key point is over steering. An experienced driver can tell his mechanic what exactly is the problem with a simple word!

Philipe suggest me to stop driving the car, as it is not possible for me to control it because an experienced driver like him could not control the car at the moment. Philipe is correct. He tried to demonstrate to Alan how the car over steer, and get into gravel.

Alan made some adjustment to solve the problem of over steer. My trust on the car comes back in free practice and I qualified 3rd with a lap time of 1’59.106. My best qualify every. But the car is still a little bit strange for me because I did not use full rpm during testing.

Race 3 started. Everybody told me to avoid bump before the race, so I am very careful to leave some space for the car around. I followed the 1st and 2nd car turning into the first corner, but all of sudden, there are 2 cars around, so I leave some space for them and they overtake me immediately. My position dropped to 5th, and I follow the car in front me turn into T4.

Just before Apex, I felt a big bump on the rear right of my car and my car started to spin to the left. Almost at the same time, there is a yellow Caterham jumped from my left and my car went back to the track. I realized that nobody would leave you space although everybody tell you that you should leave space to the others. There has been a complaint that I cut lines. If I listen to the complain, then what I can do is only not to follow correct racing lines and let other drivers pass.

The next day 30 minutes before qualify 4, Alan and I were called to be in the organizer HKAA’s office because some driver said we have to responsible for the bump. HKAA is very fair. They checked all possible video recordings and judged it is not my fault.

However, it took my attention away on driving. I only qualified 8th, 3.6 second gap from pole. I want to gain a proper position. So as soon as I sense the lights start to change, I try to put on gas. As soon as the gas paddle started to move, I realized that the light just come on, and I should wait until the lights go off. The feel strange about the car, so I lower my face to watch the dashboard and then found the car was off. All the car dash to the first corner at this moment and I have to re-start my car. When I started to fun, all the cars are already in the first corner. I started to overtake and finally finished 4th overall.
