12月2日,来自加州大学圣巴巴拉分校的知名教授Michael Curtin做了一场题为“语言的宿命和媒介首都(资本)的逻辑”的讲座。

Curtin教授认为媒介的全球化不能被简单地认为是文化的同化或西方的霸权。事实上,它是一系列庞大而复杂的进程,其运作是跨越地方性的、交互性的以及动态的。为了说明这些进程背后最为重要的推动力,Curtin教授提出了媒介首都(资本)这个一语双关的概念,它既是一个地理概念,意味着媒介活动的中心,也指代可以积聚和流动的资源、声誉和人才。

Curtin教授用媒介首都的概念解释了为何一些地方,如香港、孟买和布鲁特,会在全球化进程中成为文化生产的中心,他认为,媒介首都(资本)的运作是在一种积聚的逻辑、创造力运行的轨迹以及社会文化因素的作用下进行的。

在他的讲座中,Curtin教授还详细分析了语言与媒介之间的关系,他指出语言是最强大而稳固的影响媒介跨国流动的社会文化因素之一,也是全球化世界上中仍有多个媒介首都的重要原因。

 

On December 2, 2010, Michael Curtin, a distinguished professor from the University of California, Santa Barbara, gave an inspiring speech entitled “The Fatality of Language and the Logic of Media Capital”.

 

Professor Curtin argued that globalization of media should not be understood reductively as cultural homogenization or Western hegemony. Instead, it was a large set of complicated processes that were operated translocally, interactively, and dynamically. To provide a persuasive account of the most significant forces driving these processes, Professor Curtin advanced the double-meaning Media Capital, which was not only a spatial concept meaning the center of media activity,but also a concept meaning the resources, reputation and talent which could be accumulated and circulated.

 

Professor Curtin used the concept Media Capital interpreting why some places, such as Hong Kong, Mumbai and Beirut, became centers of cultural production in the globalization process. He indicated that Media capital was operated according to the logic of accumulation, trajectories of creative migration, and forces of sociocultural variation.

 

In his speech, Professor Curtin particularly explored the connection between media and language. He emphasized language was one of the most powerful and persistent socialcultural factors which were influencing the transnational flow of media, and it’s also an important reason why so many media capitals co-exist in the contemporary globalization world.

2010年10月15日,来自圣安德鲁斯大学的Dina Iordanova教授作了一场名为“世界电影动态:五股跨国电影流动潮流”的报告。

她批评之前的一些研究只把世界电影分成了两块:强大而繁荣的好莱坞以及弱小而每况愈下的世界其它国家电影。但事实上,当下的世界电影圈正发生着剧烈的变化,一方面,中国、印度等地的电影工业正在好莱坞之外迅速崛起,我们有必要关注这些新兴的力量如何改变着世界电影的结构。另一方面,电影生产和传播也变得越来越全球化,对世界电影的研究,要尝试超越以往僵化的国族电影框架,建构起一种新的全球性的视野。

基于这种理论视野,Dina Iordanova教授分析了当下世界电影中存在的五种跨国流动的潮流:全球性的大片,电影节电影,通过跨国电视频道传播的电影,在海外侨民中传播的电影,以及通过互联网流通的电影。

 

Professor Dina Iordanova from St Andrews University gave an inspiring speech named Dynamics of world cinema: Five strands in transnational film circulation on October 15.

 

Professor Iordanova criticized the researches before which only divided world film into two parts: one is prospectus Hollywood, and another is the weak and fading rest, but actually the map of contemporary world film was experiencing changes and becoming much more complicated.

 

For one thing, the film industry in China, India and some other countries are developing rapidly. We should pay more attention to how these emerging markets are changing the global dynamic of cinema.

 

For another, the production and distribution of films were growing globalization. Thus, we should try to get over the strictly defined national film framework before, building a new global vision to understand the essence and the effects of transnational film flows.

 

Based on this vision, professor Iordanova indentified and discussed five strands of transnational film distribution in contemporary world: global blockbusters, films circuiting in festival, films on transnational TV channels, films circuiting in diasporic community, and the film disseminated via internet.
