One of the best things about getting older is that you have the opportunity to compare the same things you have done before.  

 

These last 2 days I was in Seoul which I have been visiting on and off for 20 years. I have a lot of good friends there, becuase I have met a lot of people during the many times I visited and filmed here.  But this trip was very eye-opening.  The whole of Asia is today like the 1st World, and Europe is like the 3rd world these days.  Just like going through Immigration when you arrive.  In Paris, there were only officials on duty and in any Asian country, at lesaet 5-10 people on duty. Paris Charles De Gaulle airport feels old, but every airport in Asia, from Beijing to Shanghai, to Bangkok to Seoul are sparkling.

I will tell you more why I was so impressed with Seoul this time.  First the cleanliness.  That really hits me.  So So clean! Now, that is one of the charactistics of the Korean people that I love so much.  I stayed in Yan Bien in Heilong jiang province one time with the Korean Chinese and was impresed by their cleanliness.  So cleanliness has nothing to do with wealth! It is a habit.  the bathrooms were absolutely spotlessnessly clean. I wish Shanghai and Beijing could learn.  I hate public bathroom in the airports in China. So embarassing.  Can't we do it better? 

There is also getting to be thoughtful.  Where you fill out the forms for immigration?  the table has a few eye glasses for people who cannot read very well. Please just imagine that?  no one steals them either.  Amazing, no?

I also went to a department store called New World.  They have at least young men and women parking attendants, in beautiful uniforms, salute and direct you to empty car park.  It BLEW ME AWAY.  I had never seen this before.  That was real service.  But of course, that was only in the New World department store.  They others do not have that.

Seoul used to be a very ugly city but today, it is all nicely built up.  Since I love Korean food, I usually have very good meals there.  I love the spice.  I stayed at the Shiller Hotel which is stunningly gorgeous.  Every inch of that hotel was meticulously installed, even though it is a big too big to give you a warm homey feeling especially in the lobby.  It is owned by the biggest company in Korea, Samsung.  The service was so refine!  THAT is  a big change.  I had a great stay there and must judge it as one of the great hotels in the world. 

I used to not think very much of Korean men.  Well, the older generation to me is still not so great, but the YOUNGER generation?  they are very attractive. The younger men are even handsome.  I never thought so before, but this time, I saw some very well mannered and very good looking and well-dressed people.

My purpose for going to Korea was to check out the Fashion scene. It is active. But if I were to say the creativity, I would say that it is still not Europe.  But it is beginning to make very nice fabric, not Italy yet though.
