在新概念第三册第26课的练习中有这样一句：What among other things enables advertisers to sell a product more easily？ (第128页，第1题)。在这个例句中among不是我们常见的“在…中”的意思，而是表示“除了…”或“是…其中之一”的意思。主要是用来表达句子中的所说的情况只是许多因数中的一个。
    记得托福阅读中有这样一个例句： Leadership, among other things, requires ability to make decisions. （除了其它素质以外，领导才能需要有作决策的能力）。这句话中如果没有among other things就会显得不够严谨，因为领导能不仅仅是决策能力。
    有一篇文章谈到宇航员在太空中所遇到的困难时说：Among other things, they had to stand pressure 3 times the force of gravity. （除了其它一些困难之外，他们得承受地球引力三倍的压力）。这里among的用法与上面的意思是一样的。
     如果你留心的话，新概念课本的第32课的练习中的第2题同样有这样的用法： In ordering as much as possible to be salvaged from the wreck, the captain hoped, among other things, to establishe the identify of the ship. (船长命令尽量地从沉船的残骸中多打捞一些东西，他希望能确定船的身份)。这句话里也用among other things, 意思是确定沉船的身份只是多打捞的目的之一。
     我总是告诉我的学生，如果你在阅读中第一次碰到一个用法，你至少要搞懂它的意思。如果你第二次再碰到这个用法，你就应该把它变成能用来表达自己的东西了。当一个编教科书的人让一个用法出现两次以上的时候，他实际上是希望学生能学会它。你能体会到编书人的良苦用心吗？要不用这个短语造个句？

     你还可以用among来表示“是…之一”。譬如：
     Beads are among the most common items found in ancient archeological sites. 珠子是在考古发掘现场发现的最常见的物件之一（托福例句）。
     Mr. Pierce was among the keynote speakers on the opening day of the Company. 皮尔斯先生是公司成立仪式上的中心发言人之一。
Our company was among four companies receiving the Ron Brown Award. 我们公司是获得让布朗奖的四家公司之一。

     你觉不觉得这比：Our company is one of the four companies receiving the award. 的说法听起来有味道一些？

     其实上面的那个托福例句也可以写成：Leadership, which is among other things, requires ability to make decisions. 不过一般不这样用罢了。
