It’s an alarming prospect for anyone who believes Elon Musk already has far too much sway over the way the world works. The Tesla boss is reportedly being lined up as a potential policy advisor for the U.S. government.

That’s according to the Wall Street Journal, which says Musk and Donald Trump have already discussed possible ways for the billionaire EV pioneer to exert “formal input and influence” over policies relating to both the U.S. economy and border security.

Any appointment hinges on Trump being reinstated as President in November’s election because it’s safe to assume Joe Biden won’t be extending a hand in Elon’s direction if he retains the top job. While Musk hasn’t explicitly endorsed Trump, he has said he will use his influence to help defeat the incumbent President by “galvanizing the support of influential allies,” the WSJ says.

The two men and billionaire investor Nelson Peltz also discussed the possibility of funding a “data-driven project to prevent voter fraud,” the WSJ’s sources claim. Musk, like Trump, previously aligned himself with the Democrats, but has drawn closer to the Republican Party in recent years, to the dismay of many left-leaning Tesla buyers.

The Space X and X CEO supported Barack Obama in 2008, Hilary Clinton in 2012, and Joe Biden in 2020, but in the last four years has been a vocal critic of Biden’s policies on topics like immigration and tariffs.

Musk hadn’t yet acquired Twitter – subsequently renamed X – in 2021 when Trump was kicked off the platform following the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump went on to create his own rival social media platform, Truth Social, but returned to X in the fall of 2023.
