What I
admire the most about Lee Kuan Yew is his intelligence, vision,
firmness, power of analysis, sense of reality, no-nonsense,
willingness to shoulder responsibility and face consequences for
adhering to principles, as well as, the fact that he was almost
always right. No one else is able to be so practical, direct and
honest in dealing with people and work. As a person who calls this
place home and has deeply invested in its future, I have both
worries and hopes for a post-Lee Kuan Yew Singapore. His
monopolization of power looked natural and appropriate given his
superman ability to deliver performance. One thing is for sure: His
ruling styles cannot and will not be replicated. After him, the
political monopolization will disappear and uncertainties will
inevitably rise. It is likely that Singapore will become more and
more a country Lee Kuan Yew did not want it to be during his prime,
but hopefully in good ways. To me, it all depends on whether
Singapore will eventually become a place driven by self-interested
political attitudes and popularism, or not.
May he
rest in peace.
