Subversive
Strategies in Contemporary Chinese Art, edited by Mary
Bittner Wiseman and Liu Yeudi, provides a vast amount of
information on Chen Lingyang and the inspiration behind her work.
The section I focused on is titled “Case Study: A Snapshot of
Contemporary Chinese Women’s Art Female Bodies, Different
Expressions”. One of the most interesting facets
of this work is the comparison of Chen Lingyang’s work with those
of western feminist artists Judy Chicago and Carolee Schneemann.
Although all three artists include the female body in their works,
they channel different expressions. Another important aspect of
this book is the self-interview Chen Lingyang constructs between
Chen Lingyang No.1 and No.2. She emphasizes the
importance of time and patterns in her work. The closing of this
section includes a detailed comparison of Chen Lingyang’s
works, The
25thhour,
and Twelve
Flower Months, which presents a possible
contrast in meaning in both pieces. In
conclusion, Subversive Strategies in Contemporary Chinese
Art presents further insight into Chen
Lingyang’s story, her motivations and visions, and her several
unique works.
