八达岭长城西边有一片区域，看着应该是北京的地界，却属于河北张家口怀来陈家堡。陈家堡地理位置特殊，位于东花园镇东南约25公里燕山脚下的深山之中，东面、北面、南面均与北京接壤，距北京城区仅70公里。京藏高速东花园镇往东不久就进入北京市界，往南经过外炮、里炮和帮水峪等几个北京的村庄，然后才能再回到河北地界，到达陈家堡。

     这里是典型的山区，有着丰富的长城资源，共有长城28公里，其中有8公里的长城是与北京市的分界线。这里的长城多是明代所建，大部分是砖石结构，是长城建筑中最经典的部分。这段长城依着山势曲折环回，长城在山顶没完没了地持续，气势宏伟壮观。其景色特点有三绝：单边长城，罗锅长城和山险长城。单边长城即只有一面城墙和一条过道。罗锅长城即一段U字形急拐弯，它是万里长城的一道绝无仅有奇观。山险长城，它的垭口一边是长城，垭口的一边为峭壁，没有城墙。明末清初李自成进京的双关子，落差最大的“联三段”等都可以在这里觅到踪迹。这里敌楼密布，在长城建筑中，敌楼密度如此之大实属罕见。还有亲密的鸳鸯楼，号称三街六巷的将军楼。站在城楼上还能远眺官厅水库，看那飞来的天漠。

     怀来县狼山风口、官厅水库东南沿岸一带是传统意义上的北京“上风口”。所以，陈家堡长城的精华全在南段，北边一段因为风大，墙砖甚至建长城的条石都吹走了，剩下碎末的粉长城。很CHINA，拆啦！

   起来早了，小风吹着，没见个人，很阴森森。好在这段长城在几个山头和山谷间迂回徘徊，景色和感觉都还不错。有点苦了当时的规划设计师，如果还没有长城，这山头翻着够累的。
