A Jueju Written in Summer
Li Qingzhao
One ought to live as a hero in this world
And after death a hero remain.
The memory of Xiang Yu is cherished to this day
Because he chose to die, not to cross the river, after his defeat.
By Li Qing Zhao (Song Dynasty)
Minor
Quatrains of Summer
To live as a heroic man of men (A)
To die as a heroic ghost again (A)
Now thinking of XiangYu, the bygone overlord* (B)
Unyielding, he kills himself with a sword (B)
* XiangYu (232-202BC) was a
general in Chu Kingdom. He committed suicide in
the
western shore of Wu River, since he refused to cross Wu River to surrender his rivalry
Liu Ban on the east shore.
The Wu River
Li
Qingzhao
Living, he towered above men;
Dead, he's a hero of the ghosts.
I've oft pondered o'er Xiang Yu, when,
Having lost his hometown-enrolled host,
He'd rather die of self-slit throat,
Than crossing th' River in a boat!
Summer Quatrain
Li
Qingzhao
Being living, ought to be the gaint,
And so to be hero after passing away.
By now we still honor the Overlord Chu,
Who rejected alive as a suffered way.
A Five-Character-Quatrain in Summer
By
Li Qingzhao
To be alive, one should be a great man,
If dead, one could be a heroic ghost.
We think of Xiang Yu* who’d rather die than
Cross the river and flee to the east coast.
*Xiang Yu was a well-known political figure in Chinese history; he was also a prominent military leader in the late Qin dynasty.

About
Overlord Xiang Yu
Be a hero if you are alive;
Be a martyr if you'ar dead.
He had better die standing
Rather than live on knees.

Song
of Overlord Xiang Yu
You’re a hero or a martyr indeed
No matter you are alive or dead;
Xiang Yu died fighting in the battle
Instead of crossing Wujiang River.
