现在再讨论莎士比亚的一首“十四行诗”；这是好些英国文学读本选用的。其原文如下：
1. Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day ?
2. Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
3. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
4. And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
5. Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
6. And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
7. And every fair from fair sometime declines,
8. By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed;
9. But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
10. Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
11. Nor shall Death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
12. When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st.
  13. So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
  14. So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
此诗十四行分四段，前三段每段四行，均按abab押韵；第四段最后两行常是诗的警句，互相押运。为了准确，用数字标明诗行的顺序，其押韵的具体情况是：1与3；2与4；5与7；6与8；9与11；10与12；13与14。这是莎士比亚“十四行诗”的典型模式。
莎士比亚的语言基本是现代英语，但属于“早期”，被称作“早期现代英语”，人称代词与物主代词处于新旧交替两者并行的阶段：如thou（thee）和you; thee是thou 的宾格。但thou（thee）只用作单数，相当汉语“你”，you才能同时表示“你们”；另外，thou（thee）比you 附加有修辞色彩，这里表示“亲切”。物主代词Thy与your的对应关系也是这样。与此相适应，动词的形式也跟当代英语不同：如Thou art (you are), thou ow’st (you own), thou wand’rest(you wander) ,thou grow’st（you grow）,当时词尾est（以及动词过去式词尾ed）可以用省略形式。另外，动词第三人称形式一般跟当代英语一样，如is，shines，declines，lives，gives；但动词have第三人称单数是 hath，不是has。

另外，第14行的this我理解为“你这种情况”，或译“（你）这种生活”，有人把this理解为“这首诗”。第4行all too short a date相当a very short date；其中all 是副词，表示“完全”、“十分”、“很”之类意思，修饰另外的副词too。
现在把此诗翻译如下：
我怎么会把你比作夏天的日子？
你比夏天的日子更温和更可爱！
野风摇动着五月里可爱的花蕾，
夏天实在是个非常短暂的季节！
上天的眼睛太阳有时照得太热，
它金色的身体又常常黯然无光；
美好事物总会在美好时刻衰落，
由于偶然或自然变迁而失去美；
但你那永恒的夏天绝不会退去，
你拥有的美好事物也不会丧失；
死神也不夸口你在他辖区散步，
你将游历在永恒的时间长河里，
像正常人呼吸、像正常人观察，
愿你这种生活长存并使你长寿！
此稿完成后我又对比了梁宗岱先生的译文。我和他译文的差别也主要是对this一词的理解。我还在其他书里见到他与一样的看法。现在转录他的译文如下：

怎么能够把你来比作夏天？
你不独比它可爱也比它温婉；
狂风把五月宠爱的嫩蕊作践，
夏天出赁的期限又未免太短；
夏天的眼睛有时照得太酷烈，
它那炳耀的金颜又常遭掩蔽，
被机缘或无常的天道所摧折，
没有芳艳不终于雕残或销毁。
但是你的长夏永远不会雕落，
也不会损失你这皎满的红芳，
或死神夸口你在他影里漂泊，
当你在不朽的诗里与时同长。
只要一天有人类，或人类有眼睛，
这诗将长存，并且赐给你生命。
