《关雎》  Cooing Turtledoves

关关雎鸠， Turtledoves coo there     Coo,coo turtledoves  

在河之州。 Cooing on the ait.        Cooing on the ait

窈窕淑女， The lass's so fair        The lass the lad loves   

君子好逑。 The lad's dream mate.     His dream mate.

参差荇菜， Lush are the water-ferns

左右流之。 Riversides she picks along.

窈窕淑女， For her he madly yearns

寤寐求之。 She's fair and young!

求之不得， He woos with love true

寤寐思服。 But gets not a yes-I-do

悠哉悠哉， Nights endlessly spread

辗转反侧。 He's restless in bed.

参差荇菜， Water-ferns short n long.

左右采之。 Riversides she plucks along.

窈窕淑女， O,fair lady! I love you

琴瑟友之。 Lute tells my love true.

左右芼之。 Riversides she culls along.

窈窕淑女， What a fair lass! ooh!

钟鼓乐之。 With bell n drum I woo.

GUAN JU

Guan-guan go the ospreys ,

On the islet in the river .

The modest , retiring , virtuous , young lady : --

For our prince a good mate she .

Here long , there short , is the duckweed ,

To the left , to the right , borne about by the current .

The modest , retiring , virtuous , young lady : --

Waking and sleeping , he sought her .

He sought her and found her not ,

And waking and sleeping he thought about her .

Long he thought ; oh ! long and anxiously ;

On his side , on his back , he turned , and back again .

Here long , there short , is the duckweed ;

On the left , on the right , we gather it .

The modest , retiring , virtuous , young lady : --

With lutes , small and large , let us give her friendly welcome .
