饮湖上初晴后雨
水光潋滟晴方好，山色空濛雨亦奇;
欲把西湖比西子，淡装浓抹总相宜。
蔡廷干译：
Rain in the West Lake
The lake first sparkled in the sun's bright dazzling
sheen,
Then wonder-making showers the verdant hills would
screen.
For varied charms the West Lake well may I comare
To Xizi, who, adorned or not, alike was fair.

注一：西施相传是春秋时代的绝代佳人，是中国老百姓有口皆碑、妇孺皆知的
美女。她姓施，名夷光；因为她生于“西村”（或某村子的西头），所以叫“西
施”。据说她被越王勾践献给吴王夫差，以美色消磨其斗志。她完成自己的特殊
政治任务后投西湖自尽。
注二：西湖的名称在唐代就有了，白居易的诗里就多次用过这个名称，但“西子
湖”的别名始于宋代，与苏轼的这首名诗有关。西湖原来位于杭州之西。但后来
由于城市的发展和扩充，西湖现在位于杭州的中心。
Note 1. Xizi or Xishi was born in West Village or in the west
of this
village. She was known with her beauty. “Shi” is her real
surname or
last name. “Xi”（西）means in Chinese “west” used as an
attribute
or adjective indeed, but thought by many people as her surname
or last
name.
Note 2. Name “West Lake” began in Tang Dynasty, for it was in
the west
of Hangzhou City; but now it is in the middle of Hangzhou
City, for the
city extends to the east of West Lake.
