四、副词表示因果关系

1. thus 因此，从而

  It is late, and thus you must go.

  We hope the new machine will work faster, thus reducing our cost. 我们希望新机器将工作得更快，从而降低成本。

2. therefore 因此，所以

  The new car is smaller and therefore cheaper. 

  Those people have their umbrellas up; therefore it must be raining.

3. consequently因此，所以

  She was a bright and eager student and, consequently did well in school. 她是个聪明好学的学生，因此学习成绩很好

4. 在商贸英语中“there + 介词”可以组合成副词，表示“因此，从而”。如thereby, thereupon,etc.

  The strike closed the ports, thereby adversely affecting the imbalance of payments. 

  罢工使那些港口关闭，由此必然会对国际收支差额产生不利影响。 adverse 不利的,相反的

  The stolen jewels were found in his room; thereupon he was put in jail. 

5. thence 因此，所以

  You didn’t work; thence you will get no pay.

  He was given his decision and thence there is no appeal. 他已宣布了他的决定，因此再申诉也没有用了。
