☆我们先来看韦氏词典对于illustrate的解释：

transitive verb：

1.to light up

2.to make illustrious

3.to make clear :  clarify；to make clear by giving or by serving as an example or instance；to provide with visual features intended to explain or decorate <illustrate a book>

4.to show clearly :  demonstrate；

intransitive verb : 

to give an example or instance；

我们再来看看例句：

He illustrated his lecture with stories of his own experiences in the field.

所以大概意思就是用例子或者图表把一件事情或者一个观点解释清楚这个动作就是“illustrate”.

我们在英语写作，比如六级或者雅思小作文，碰到图表题时，开头都是the chart illustrates ……

​可见这个词表示“照亮”，要么是光线把物体照亮了，要么就是一些思想把我们的大脑照亮了。

所以，最后总结一下，illustrate一般就是一个动作，在阐述一个事情，而illuminate不仅有阐述这个动作，还有成功的结果，让人豁然开朗。就像try和manage类似。
