Is the Internet leading us all to a lower life?
Unfortunately, the answer is “Yes”. China’s major big-time portals such as Sohu, Tom, and Sina all turned corner and became profitable with SP – the wireless services, including SMS, WAP, IVR, MMS and RBT, that bring “entertainment” information to cell phone users, after years of unprofitability. According to a recent survey, 70% of the “entertainment” information of China’s SP industry is erotic that entertains “body parts below belly only”-- a typical Internet Chinese slang.
Netease and Shanda, the other prime time players of the Internet sector, are busy with riveting eyeballs of millions of teenage boys and girls on Internet games for hours at crowded and smelly Internet cafes, leaving the parents scratching their heads to drag them to libraries or gyms. Thus China’s new generation of youngsters growing up at the Internet era, is less intelligent and sporty, compared to their parent’s generation who grew up reading books and playing football.
What about Baidu? Isn’t it believed to be China’s Google – the Internet Saint and the most valued Internet company in the world, revered all over because of its famous motto – “You can make money without doing evil”? Baidu should be the Pure Land, right? Just consider the fact that the mp3 search of Baidu is the fastest freeway to tons of Web sites offering illegal downloads of pirated digital music and movie contents, which leaves China’s digital media industry aching in hell, you may put Baidu right to the electrical chair of the death chamber --- at least what others do, though not ethical, is not related to crimes.
Wow! Looks like almost all players are in the dark side of the Force. Who will come into rescue as the Internet’s Luke Skywalker of China?
