Figures of speech (修辞)are ways of making our language figurative. When we use words in other than their ordinary or literal sense to lend force to an idea, to heighten effect, or to create suggestive imagery, we are said to be speaking or writing figuratively. Jonathan Schell was a writer for The New Yorker from 1967 to 1987 and a columnist for Newsday from 1990 to 1996. He teaches at Wesleyan University and the New School, and is the Harold Willens Peace Fellow at The Nation Institute. In 2002 and 2003, Schell was a persistent critic of the invasion of Iraq.
