When I read the poem The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls, it reminded me the English poet Alexander Pope once said “The Sound must seem an Echo to the Sense.” That poem is truly brief but elegant, and we can easily get the sensitivity according to the echo of the poem. After analysis, we find that the phonetics and the rhythm of the poem is accord with the ideological content of the poem perfectly. When we finished reading it, many associative thoughts come to our mind, and we are amazed by the poet’s artistic talent.

The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls is written in 1879. It is a poem that is full of the beauty of simplicity. The poet uses the simple words, airy style of writing, and beautiful rhythm to draw a harmonious picture of sea and traveler. The repetitive lines “the tide rises, the tide falls” bring readers to the poem’s hometown, the wide seashore in New England, with a unique rhythm. The poet reposed his comprehension of life in the image of the t

These days I have read some American poems, some of them impressed me much with their beauty, passion or wisdom. However, Walt Whiteman’s O Captain! My Captain! impressed me the most with its genuine passion and the power of words.

In order to understand this poem, we must know about the background firstly. “O Captain! My Captain!” is a poem written by the American Poet Walt Whitman in 1865, the year when the civil war ended and the president Lincoln was murdered. OK, to know these is enough, as we all know, Lincoln is one of the three greatest presidents, Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt, in American history. In his age, the conflict between North and South was fierce due to the different opinions to the slavery system in the American South. It was Lincoln that ended the different development patterns in America. He contributed a lot to his nation as he made America be a new America which is full of liberte, egalite

The Appreciation of to Helen

This is a lyrics named to Helen, which was written by Edgar Allan Poe. Known as the American author and poet of the Romantic Movement, Poe rose to critically acclaim for his poetry and short stories by the early 1800's. He is good at using mysteries, images that are far away from readers in time and place. Those images can be some objective or personal, such as goddess, heaven, Zeus, Trojan War and so on, to show his creative thoughts and feelings. Also he is the master of the figure of speech, for his feelings are described freely and totally. To Helen falls into this type of poem. In the poem, the poet uses some archaic words and Greek story; together with a series of rhetoric to show his first love of Mrs. Jane Stith Standard, the mother of one of his classmates. Poe described the poem as “line written, in my passionate boyhood, to the first, purely ideal love of my soul.”

The poem includes th

节奏及韵律:

这是一首规范的四步抑扬格小诗。诗歌的押韵形式是a a b a, b b c b, c c d c, d d d d.例如第一诗节中的know,though,here,snow.

Appreciation of The Psalm of Life

The Psalm of Life is one of the most famous poems written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a famous American poet. The poem expresses Longfellow’s understanding of life.

Firstly, the poem consists of nine stanzas and every stanza has four lines rhyming abab. Generally, the poem is written in iambic tetrameter though some parts are in trimeter. Besides, at the end of the line, the poet uses single rhyme and double rhyme to vary the form of the poem. For example, the words “number” and “slumber” in the first line and third line reflect the use of double rhyme while “dream” and “seem” use single rhyme. Also, the poet uses alliteration to make the poem easy to pronounce. For instance, for the soul is dead that slumber; and the grave is not its goal. The use of rhyme, alliteration and end rhyme makes the poe

The analysis ofI Hear America Singing”

   Author ---Walt Whiteman was an American poet, essayist and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality.

1.     Rhyme Scheme---Whiteman is considered the father of free verse, and this poem can not be an exception. So there is no rhyme scheme.

2.     Rhythm and Meter --- There is no metrical pattern. He uses repetition to create rhythm.

3.     Word Choice --- ‘Carols’ in line 1

The Flea 赏析

The Flea

John Donne

 Mark but this flea, and mark in this,
 How little that which thou deniest me is;
 Me is sucked first, and now sucks thee,
 And in this flea our two bloods mingled be;
 Thou know’st that this cannot be said
 A sin, or a shame, or loss of maidenhead,
 Yet this enjoys before it woo,
 And pampered swells with one blood made of two,
 And this ,alas, is more than we would do.

 Oh stay, three lives in one flea spare,
 Where we almost, nay more than married are.
 This flea is you and I, and this
 Our marriage bed and marriage temple is;
 Though parents grudge, and you, we are met.
 And cloistered in these living walls of jet.
 Though use make you apt
