尽管这四个词都可以译作“国家”，但它们的用法和搭配关系却有很大的不同。

 

country主要是指主权的、统一的国家，往往侧重于疆土，是中性词。有时是指全国的人民。如：

 

Canada is a larger country than Spain. 加拿大的土地面积比西班牙大。

 

The country is opposed to war. 那个国家举国上下反对战争。

 

After many years abroad, she wanted to return to her country. 在国外呆了很多年，她想回到自己的祖国去。

 

注：country还可指与城市相对的农村。如：

 

They grew up in the country. 他们都是在农村长大的。

 

nation也可以指国家，比state更为庄重，所以联合国用的是the United Nations。但有时侧重于指“人民；国民”。如：

 

The President spoke on TV to the nation. 总统对全国人民发表电视演说。

 

同时，nation也可以指“民族”。如：

 

The Jewish nation is scattered around the world. 犹太民族散居于世界各地。

 

state是政权意义上的“国家；政府”。如：
