威尔还是个孩子的时候，父亲爱德华就跟他讲述自己年轻时那些光怪陆离的亲身经历。可威尔一直怀疑故事的真实性，无法接受一个经过粉饰的父亲。在与父亲最后一次见面的交流中，威尔发现这些故事只是父亲要保留过去的激情和诚实的一种方式而已。爱德华终于获得了儿子的尊重和理解，威尔最后为父亲讲述了一个即将成为事实的故事：爱德华将会在深爱着他的亲人的围绕中安详地逝去。 
 
Young Ed Bloom: There are some fish that cannot be caught. It's not that they're faster or stronger than other fish. They're just touched by something extra.  
青年爱德华：有些鱼是人们抓不到的。那不是因为它们比起其它的鱼更加敏捷、壮硕，而是因为它们拥有别的特质。 
 
Young Ed Bloom: There comes a point when any reasonable man will swallow his pride and admit he made a mistake. The truth is... I was never a reasonable man.

Senior Ed Bloom: Oh, you don't need a picture. Just look up "handsome" in the dictionary.

Senior Ed Bloom: They say when you meet the love of your life, time stops, and that's true. What they don't tell you is that when it starts again, it moves extra fast to catch up.

Young Ed Bloom: There's a time when a man needs to fight and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny’s lost, the ship has sailed and that only a fool will continue. The truth is I've always been a fool.

Will Bloom: Dad, I have no idea who you are because you've never told me a single fact. 
Senior Ed Bloom: I've told you a thousand facts, Will. That's what I do, I tell stories! 
Will Bloom: You tell... lies, Dad. You tell amusing lies. Stories are what you tell a 5-year-old at bedtime. They're not elaborate mythologies that you maintain when your son is 10 and 15 and 20 and 30. And I believed you. I believed your stories. So much longer than I should have. Then when I realized everything you said was impossible... I felt like a fool to have trusted you. You're like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Just as charming and just as fake. 
Senior Ed Bloom: You think I'm fake. 
Will Bloom: Only on the surface, Dad. But it's all I've ever seen. Look. I'm about to have a kid of my own. It would kill me if he went through his whole life never understanding me. 
Senior Ed Bloom: It would kill you, huh? What do you want, Will? Who do you want me to be? 
Will Bloom: Just yourself. Good, bad, everything. Just show me who you are for once. 
Senior Ed Bloom: I've been nothing but myself since the day I was born. And if you can't see that, it's your failing, not mine! 
威尔：爸，我不知道你是谁。因为你从未告诉我实话。 
老年爱德华：我跟你讲过的可多了。我就是这样，我讲故事！ 
威尔：你讲的……是谎言，可笑的谎言。故事是拿来哄５岁小孩的，不是当你儿子已经10岁、15岁到20、30岁了还继续编造的神话。我相信过你。我相信你太久了。当我发现你说的根本是天方夜谭。我觉得只有笨蛋才会相信你。你就像圣诞老人加复活节兔子，迷人却虚假。 
老年爱德华：你认为我虚假？ 
威尔：表面上是，而我也只看到表面。听着，我自己的孩子已即将出生，他若不了解我，我会很痛苦。 
老年爱德华：你会很痛苦？你想要怎样？你要我变成什么样的人？ 
威尔：就是你自己。好坏皆然。让我看一次你真正的面貌。 
老年爱德华：我从出生起就一直是我自己，你看不出来是你的错，错不在我。 
 
Will Bloom: A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal.  
威尔：一个人不停述说自己的故事，他自己也就成了故事本身。故事在他死后继续流传，那样，他也变得永恒不朽了。
