Hi potential visa applicant!

Getting a  visa is easy.  In China, we currently approve over 80% of all applicants—and the percentage of approved applicants continues to increase every day given China's rising domestic economy, domestic opportunities and strong bilateral relations.  We welcome you to travel, research, and study in the United States!

Here are three quick tips that will make the interview process easier on the Consular Officer, and more importantly, easier on you, the applicant:

1)      Wait until the Consular Officer asks a question or prompts you to start the interview.  Often the Consular Officer is finishing a prior case, looking at several software programs, and are not yet ready for you—even though you are next in line and anxious to get started.  Wait until they prompt you to start talking.

2)      Answer the question the Consular Officer asks, no more no less.  If the officer asks a yes or no question, a yes or no answer is perfectly appropriate.  If they want more elaboration on an answer, they will ask for it.

3)      Respond to the officer in the language of the question asked.  If the officer uses Chinese, respond in Chinese.  If the officer uses English, respond in English.  There is usually a reason that the officer is using one or the other language, and it gets very confusing if you assume one language is better or worse.  If you did not understand the question, please just say so.  Officers will be happy to rephrase and ask the gist of the same question in a different way.

Good luck, and we look forward to seeing you here soon!

Joey Bristol
