There Is No Landscape Photography, Only Natural Scenery

Curator: Na Risong

In the general sense of landscape photography, photographers are always used to transfer natural scenery to some gaudy postcard-like images, even without any trail of art or spirit. With the development of digital technology and the changes occurred in the factors such as geology and traffic, the former rare landscape images with great light are becoming easy to obtain, due to which, the so-called “landscape photography” has been gradually faded away from the high-end image art sanctuary of China, along with those ever highly respected “landscape photographers” went down from the altar. The former “landscape photography” with Chinese characteristics is becoming a beautiful “myth”.

Recent years saw disputes and criticism on “landscape photography” frequently appeared on internet and newspaper, among which, the standpoint of the famous photographer Chen Changfen (In the early 90s of the last century, Chen Changfen has been firmly refusing people to characterize him as a “landscape photographer”) is of the most powerful and representative. He said: “Nowadays, landscape photography in China has the ill-defined problem. The landscape we are talking about is all about meteorological phenomena. Landscape should be a state of mind. How could you be a landscape artist if you cannot talk with nature yourself? You are at best a traveler. Landscape photography does not equal to photographic art, but it is an integral part of the latter. Landscape photography has no fault by its own. It is people who mass it up and stain it.”

The former Chinese landscape photography is mixed with too much utilitarianism and fabrication.

Farewell, the tedious landscape photography! Let us go back to the true “natural scenery”.

About the theme of this exhibition—“another landscape”.

To curators, this is not an easy task. What is the “another?” “Human’s” nature? “Soul’s” nature? Or “Society’s” nature? It is way too wide—because everyone has his own “nature” in his mind. So when we do selection of the exhibited works, we choose variety, free expression, as well as breakthrough and rebellion to the “Chinese salon landscape photography” in the past decades.

Here, thanks must be given to the 22 exhibited photographers and all those Xitek cyber-friends who contributed their works or joined the discussion. Thanks should also be given to Bao Kun, Gu Zheng, Jean Loh, Lin Lu, Ren Yue and Yan Changjiang etc., whose warm participation also makes this exhibition a different scenery.
