Shi Yan, intern at Earthrise hopes to start the first CSA farm in China

by Ethel Shelstad

A slight girl from Beijing, China has a very ambitious goal - to return to her home and start the first CSA farm in China. She has already broken one tradition - as she is the first graduate student to go to the U.S. not to study at a university but to be a farmer.

Shi Yan arrived at Earthrise Farm on April 18 and will stay here half a year to immerse herself in all aspects of operating an organic farm including planting the tiny seedlings started in the greenhouse, watering when necessary and the harvesting. On the day of the interview, she was putting dates and labels on cartons of eggs from hens who are range-free for placing in the boxes for subscribers to Earthrise Farm.

When asked how she possibly came to learn of Earthrise Farm, Shi Yan stated her advisor, Wen Tiejun was in the United States last year to give a lecture at Harvard. He visited many CSA farms in Minnesota with the help of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy and he was very interested in this kind of farms. After that, the other professor Zhou Li, also in Yan’s school, came to Minnesota and did one month of research here. Then, he recommended Yan come to the United States to do more research about CSA by following the whole season form seeding to harvest. IATP chose Earthrise Farm for Yan.

Shi Yan is in the second year of a five-year program to earn her PHD at the School of Agriculture Economics and Rural Development in Renmin University of China, located at Beijing which is a famous university in China. Her advisor is the dean of that school. Her research is focused on organic farming now.

She is the only child of Shi Jiachen (father) who is employed in an electrical supply company in Baoding and her mother (Geng Sufen) who is employed in a chemical plant. Yan sadly said they miss her very much. She stays in touch with them through email and phone calls and her blog.

Can you tell how many years of English you had? I wasn’t sure of that.

“Actually, I learnt English when I was a little, because my grandpa could speak 4 languages. Formally, I study English from middle school, which means I have learnt English for 11 years.”

“In China, the problem is food security is becoming more and more serious. Of the 5,000 years of farming in China, it’s only from last century that farmers have begun to use more and more pesticides and fertilizers. In China, we have 0.8 billion farmers which is about 60 percent of the total population. The farms are nearly all small-scale farms. The average field of each farmer is only about 0.2 acres. The majority of farmer’s income is low so they want to make more products to get more money for their living, to do this they must use more fertilizer and pesticides and food security becomes more and more serious,” Shi Yan said.

She continued, “The people living in the cities do not care where their food comes from which are full of the farmer’s sweat, showing how hard-working the farmers are every day,” Shi Yan added. Also, the farmers in China all live in a village and walk to their farm sites each day to work. Because of their small fields, the farmers in china usually do not have big machines. The tools they use are often shovels, a hand-pushed plough, hook and hoe. They plant and harvest both with their hands and some simpler tools. Some farmers will work together to hire a reaping machine.

Shi Yan explained about marketing, “First, the majority of farmers will sell their productions to a middle operation, but in some remote rural areas, as the farmers cannot get the information of the market, some marketer will buy their production with very low prices. Second, some farmers will plant for some company which has an order with them. Third, a few of the farmers will sell their produce in the farmer’s market similar to the farmers’ markets here.”

She explained the philosophy at the School of Agriculture Economics and Rural Development where she is attending is very careful when one is researching farms and agriculture, that you are responsible not only for writing paper, teaching students but also for the country and farmers. So the students can’t only stay in the lab at their university but that they should go out and see what reality is and what happens on farms and between farmers. She wants to be a scholar who can take actions and speak for the farmers because practice makes perfect.

She stated in China there are two types of graduate students - for the ones who score higher on their entrance tests, they don’t need to pay tuition while the ones who don’t get such high test scores have to pay their own expenses.

For the high school students, if they want to go to a key university, they musts have a high score in their national test which will be held for two days in June. If their test score is low, they are given the opportunity to attend high school one more year and retake the state test hoping to get a higher score.

Shi Yan keeps in touch with her university in China through her blog (http://blog.sina.com. cn/usashiyan) which she records in two or three times weekly. “All my classmates and people in China can read this to know what I’m doing here - every day is another day, every day is a learning day,” she explained.

Shi Yan commented she hopes when she return to China that she is able to convey the sense of organic farming and how they practice this at a CSA farm to the farmers in China.

Her second goal is that the School of Agriculture Economics and Rural Development she is attending may proceed a program to compare the small-scale organic farms between China and the United States. She hopes to begin the first CSA farm in China. “I know it will be hard, but I believe my advisor and the people who have the same philosophy will help me, because we have lots of experience in this area. Our school has many good teachers and experimental areas in six provinces in China,” Shi Yan confidently said.

Shi Yan is excited about the food raised at Earthrise and feels it tastes better than commercially grown food. For example, she could see the yolks are more yellow in the eggs from the range-free hens at Earthrise Farm.

Shi Yan is experiencing eating some foods she hasn’t tasted before – including strata, chili, flap jacks, crumble.

Also, she said the vegetables are much fresher going from the ground to the table at Earthrise Farm in a matter of hours. Farmers in China raise corn, rice, wheat, beans and barley and vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages, peppers, onions, etc. - but have many, many more varieties of each.

The temperature is warmer in China but they have about the same length of growing season. She laughingly related at the same temperature, people in China would be wearing long coats and people in Minnesota are wearing shorts.

Shi Yan said “In my generation, especially, in China the family has only one child in the cities but in the rural areas if your first child is a girl, you can have one more. I think the one-child rule will change in the next few years as the older population is now more than the younger ones.”

She continued that for a person to make your life complete, you must feel all kinds of emotions - - if you don’t have a brother or sister, it makes you feel incomplete.

Prior to coming to Minnesota, she googled it on the Internet and was the most impressed with the thousands of lakes and rivers in Minnesota.

“The weather in Minnesota surprised me a lot, too windy and the thunderstorms. Second, is that Americans love sweets very, very much. It is unbelievable in China if for every meal you have dessert.”

Shi Yan declared she feels a kinship with the other interns and the managers at Earthrise Farm, “We all enjoy local and fresh food. We all like organic farming. We all hope we can have a rich and colorful life.”

Shi Yan has had the opportunity to visit other CSA farms around Milan and Montevideo. After the program is finished in September, she will travel somewhere but hasn’t decided where.

She admitted to being a little sad about not being in Beijng for the Olympics this summer. “When I was in middle school, China bid for the 2000 Olympics but Sidney, Australia was chosen instead. When the announcement was made that we won for the 2008 Olympics, most of the people in China were happy. I would have worked as a volunteer if I had been there.”

“We are preparing for the Olympic gymnasium, the air condition, the security and so on. Everyday, we have lots of news from TV about Olympic, many students will be volunteers, we are expecting the Olympic.”

She concluded “The people working in and coming to Earthrise Farm are all very virtuous and nice to me. They smile a lot and talk to me slowly. I am very appreciative what they have done for me. They will be my life-long friends.”

    这个邀请我们的人就是我们董事会的一个成员Patric,他是CURE(我曾经有一篇博客写我们访问了几个NPO,这是其中一个)的主席。
