                                                     Nothing Only Waste

A man had two large pots, each hung on one end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a hole in side, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full pot of water at the end of the long walk from the river to the master’s house, the broken pot arrived only half full.

For two years this went on daily, with the man delivering one and one-half pots water to his master’s house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its perfect to the end for what it was made to do. But the poor broken pot was ashamed of its own mistake. For two years the poor pot had been bitter failure, at last it spoke one day to the man by the river.

“I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you.”

“Why?” asked the man. “What are you ashamed of?”

“I’ve been able for these two years to deliver only half my load. Because of my mistake you do not get full value for your work,” the pot said.

The man felt sorry for the poor pot too, but he said, “As we return to the master’s house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path.”

Indeed, as they went up the hill, the broken pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful flowers on the side of the path, and this made it feel better. But again the poor pot apologized to the man for its failure. The man said to the pot, “Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side? That is because I have known about your mistake, and I made use of it. Every day while we walk back from the river, you have watered them. For two years I have been able to pick those beautiful flowers to decorate my master’s table.”

Each of us has our own mistakes. We are all broken pots. But nothing only waste and don’t be ashamed of your mistakes.

See it and you too can be the cause of beauty. Know that in our weakness we will find our strength.
