By Bill Tuttle

I WAS BORN ON July 4, 1929, in tiny Cramer, Ⅲ , where local farmers played baseball for clubs sponsored by the Peoria County Farm Bureau. By age four I was batboy for my father’s team, the Cramer Merchants.
By age six I was helping my Uncle Joe deliver gasoline to nearby farms. In return he’d hit fly balls for me to catch. To build up my arm, he’d have me throw the ball to him. He wouldn’t let me quit until I threw it bull’s—eye into his glove ten times in a row.
When I was nine, my father let me join his men’s team. Opposing players laughed at the puny boy with green eyes and tousled brown hair on third base — until they discovered they couldn’t hit a ball past me.
After graduation from high school, I enrolled in Peoria’s Bradley University and played center fields for the Bradley Braves. Thanks to Uncle Joe, my throwing arm had grown so strong that I could hurl the ball from deep center field all the way to home plate—over 300 feet.
The Bradley Braves played in the College World Series in my junior year. After my final season George Moriarity, a scout for the Detroit Tigers, said something I’ll never forget: “Would you like to come to Detroit and try out? If you’re as good as I think you are. You’ll be playing Major League ball within three years.”
Quick Buzz.I signed with Detroit in June 1951. Moriarity’s prediction was right on target—I came up to the Majors full time in 1954. I was in baseball heaven.
It was in 1955, while playing with the Tigers, that I started using chewing tobacco. Bored from being sidelined briefly with an injury, I asked a teammate for some. I took a handful, rolled it into a balllike I’d seen other players do, then put it in my mouth against my left cheek.
Within minutes I felt the buzz of nicotine hitting my brain. I was energized. I chewed that day and the next, and by the third day, I was hooked. It didn’t cross my mind that I’d just begun a dangerous four—decade—long habit.
When I met Gloria in 1963, I was drawn to the strong—willed redhead. Within a year, I asked her to marry me. I dubbed her “Red.” and when I stood at the plate, I’d draw the nickname in the dirt with my bat for good luck.
I finished my Major League career in 1963, and we eventually settled in Anoka. Minn.Gloria set up an accounting business to augment my modest baseball pension. I continued to chew tobacco while golfing or fishing.
AFTER GARAGIOLA introduced me last March, I told the players I’d first felt a swelling on the inside of my right cheek in September 1993. I brushed it off as a canker sore, but it grew to the size of a golf ball.
Concerned, Gloria made an appointment for me to see a physician, who arranged a biopsy. The test results were bad. “I’m afraid it’s cancer.” the doctor told me gently. “You should see Dr.George Adams at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic in Minneapolis. He’s one of the best head and neck surgeons in the country.”
At the hospital, tests revealed an advanced form of T4 squamous cell carcinoma, an oral cancer. “I see this almost only in people who have used spit tobacco,” Dr.Adams told me.
I was stunned. “When I started,no one told me it was harmful,” l stammered, “ and I chewed on the left. This tumor’s on the right.”
“Unfortunately that doesn’t matter,” he said. “Saliva travels all through the mouth, carrying the tobacco carcinogens with it. The toxins obviously found a weak spot on your right cheek.”
“Since that time,” I told the players, my comments slightly slurred because I could use only the left half of my mouth, “I’ve had five operations, 51 radiation treatments, and I’m now on chemotherapy, I have less than a 50—50 chance of surviving for five years from when the cancer was first discovered.”
Gaping Hole.I was drained, my mouth dry. But I’d come to Florida to tell my story to these ballplayers—and I wasn’t finished. “The first operation came on November 11, 1993, and it lasted 13 1/2hours,” I told them. “Dr.Adams said it was one of the biggest tumors he’d ever removed from anyone’s mouth.”
It was so widespread, I explained, that Dr.Adams had to remove my entire cheek. This left a gaping hole in the side of my face. “To fill that,” I continued, “he cut two slabs of skin and muscle from my chest, tunneled them beneath the skin of my neck to keep the blood vessels intact, then sewed them in place in my mouth to create a new cheek.”
To try to pay my hospital bills, Gloria called the Baseball Assistance Team, an organization that helps retired players. One of the directors was Joe Garagiola. “Don’t worry,” he told Gloria. “We’ll take care of your medical expenses.”
Garagiola was also chairman of the National Spit Tobacco Education Program(NSTEP), dedicated to stamping out the use of spit tobacco. I decided to join his fight.
Hopeful that others might learn from my mistake, I shared my experience with schools and church groups. A boy around 12 came up to me after one of my talks. “I didn’t know this stuff could hurt me,” he said wide—eyed, holding out a tin of cherry—flavored snuff. Then with the honesty that only children have, he added, “I’m going to stop right now I don’t want to end up looking like you.”
Later Gloria and I, along with Joe, expanded our audience to include professional ballplayers. If young people no longer saw their role models using spit tobacco, they’d be less likely to start themselves.
Triple Threat.Through NSTEP, I learned that smokeless tobacco may contain polonium 210, a radioactive substance as well as formaldehyde, lead, cadmium, benzopyrene and nitrosamines一all potent toxins or carcinogens. While the odds of getting oral cancer from spit tobacco are about the same as from regular tobacco, a snuff user may be exposed to up to three times the level of nitrosamines as someone who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day.
The amount of nicotine delivered from a tin of snuff or a pouch of tobacco is 2.5 times greater than from a pack of cigarettes. Smokeless tobacco passes rapidly across the membranes of the mouth into the bloodstream, and may continuously deliver nicotine for up to 30 minutes.
“I thought this was a safe substance for the 38 years I used it.” I told the Yankees last March. “Instead, it’s a time bomb” Just because it took almost 40 years for cancer to hit me, I emphasized, players shouldn’t think they could wait to worry about it. “Spit tobacco can take its toll much faster than it hit me—precancerous lesions can appear in years or even months.”
The important—thing: whatever time frame you’re dealing with, the odds are bad. Of the 30,000 cases of oral cancer that appear each year, about 75 percent are linked to smokeless tobacco or smoking. Half of these victims die within five years.
Babe Ruth chewed tobacco; throat cancer killed him at 53. Jack Krol, manager of a Louisville Minor League team and a user of both snuff and chewing tobacco, got cancer of his tongue in May 1993. “My doctor told me I’d better stop, but I had to lose part of my tongue to learn, “he said. A year later he was dead.
Sean Marsee, a track star at his Oklahoma high school, began using chewing tobacco and snuff at age 12. It couldn’t be dangerous, he reasoned, or star athletes wouldn’t promote it on TV. Sean lost much of his face, but not in time to save his life. His oral cancer killed him when he was only 19. And this past May, throat cancer was diagnosed in Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Brett Butler—he had a tumor the size of a plum. Butler had used smokeless tobacco in the 1980s.
Free Samples. Despite these horror stories, the use of snuff is on the rise as sales of cigarettes have generally slipped. In 1980 Americans smoked 631 billion cigarettes. Thanks to Public education, cigarette consumption dropped to some 485 billion in 1994. During this same period, annual use of snuff skyrocketed from 25.2 million pounds to 59.5 million pounds. Smokeless—tobacco companies target young people by distributing samples in nightclubs and at rodeos.
“I’M PRESENTLY IN REMISSl0N,” I said to the players that day. “But this doesn’t mean the cancer won’t come back today or tomorrow.”
Then I turned the meeting over to Gloria. Joe Garagiola, she said, had suggested she write a letter to all the wives of Major League ballplayers. She shared parts of the letter:
“I am watching the man I love die,” she read. “It is the most difficult thing I have ever had to do in my entire life. Bill Tuttle today is not the rifle—armed Bill Tuttle who patrolled center field for ten seasons. Today Bill can’t even open a bottle of ketchup. Bill has no teeth. He has no taste buds. He has lost 75 pounds. It is horrible to see this once strong, virile man reduced to this condition, and like the brave, tough Major Leaguer he is, try to fight it with all the strength left in him.”
“I am losing my husband, my friend and my lifelong companion. I feel very lonely and frightened. It didn’t have to happen this way. Don’t let it happen to you.”
Borrowed Time. After Gloria finished, many of the Yankees came forward to thank us and ask questions. On the way out, several dropped cans of Copenhagen and Skoal into a garbage pail.
As Gloria, Joe and I left the stadium, l felt good about what we’d accomplished. I’m on borrowed time. If I can save just one life, something positive will finally come out of all the pain my family and I have gone through.
