Searching for Chinese Immigrants on the Red Star Line

Southern People Weekly magazine is working with TESIRO to trace the secret story behind immigrant families in the last two centuries.

The invention of ocean ships marks the beginning of long-distance migration in human history. Communication among different cultures is achieved by  means of migration. As time goes by, ships became the symbol of war , For now, they are more and more served as one of the most commonly-used  vehicles.

When Albert Einstein boarded the SS Westernland from South Hampton to New York, it wasn’t a voluntary leave. He, with many other Jews, communists, homosexuals and those who arenot accepted  by the Nazi regime, fled away from Europe to search for an asylum in U.S.. Also, another well-known ship called Titanic whose tragdy had been mentioned and memorized endlessly for over 100 years. . In fact, cross-ocean voyages gave migrants a chance to start a new life, and for them, travelling to the United States  is not only a journey from oppression to freedom but also an opportunity to achieve their American dreams.

One of the most famous course lines was called the Red Star Line, which, over the course of 60 years , shipped two million immigrants(including immigrants from  China )  from Antwerp to New York.. Albert Einstein was just among these imigrants.

Rise and Fall of the Red Star

One day  in the year of 1873, the Red Star Line  made her maiden voyage. Then, theBelge-Américaine shipping company was co-founded by American and Belgian businessmen. At first, the shipping company was just set up to ship crude oil to Europe and carry some passengers back when the ships returned. Since then more than two million people was transported through this line, among whom there were a significant number of Chinese people.

Antwerp in Belgium, South Hampton, Liverpool and New York were the major ports along this route. But in the second decade of the twentieth century, with the enacting of immigration laws, and then U.S. economy suffered a severe setback from the Great Depression in the 1930s. As a result, the Red Star line  began the road down to its own fall.

In September of 2013, almost one century later, the Red Star Line Museum will officially open to the public in Antwerp. The  museum  is built and opened  not only  to treasure the whistles and iron bars of the cruises which had sailed thousands of miles on the ocean , but also to rememeber  hesitations,  struggles and fears of  millions of early migrants, as well as their hopes, excitement and perseverance ; not only to protect every single building bricks of Antwerp port which have gone through so much in years, but also to record the stories of those who continued their new journey after a brief stop here.   Now, this immigrant museum acquires new value and bigger significance by absorbing Chinese element. Launched by Mr. Shen Dongjun, the chairman of TESIRO and a celebrated entrepreneur from China, the campaign to look for Chinese passengers on the Red Star Line is officially started and will follow the footsteps of Chinese immigrants more than one hundred years ago on the journey for dreams to reveal the secret history of Chinese immigrant families in the last two centuries. During  the 19th and 20th century, there appeared a huge wave of immigration worldwide and about 12 million people immigrated to the United States from 1870 to 1900. In 2010  3.8 million  Chinese – Americans live in the United States.

Keeping a Record of the Fate of  Chinese Immigrants

Today, when two centuries has passed and the society is connected steadily,  a growing number of middle-class Chinese, Chinese businessmen, students and workers are heading for America via various ways. From 2011 to 2012, the number of Chinese students studying in the U.S. is 194,029, making the population of Chinese students in the U.S. the largest one to exceed that of Indian students.

Many stories, be it the happenings along the journey or the happiness and bitterness of new life, in the first immigration wave over one hundred years ago are worthwhile to be recorded. What made the first- generation immigrants get the courage to leave their home-country to settle down in a far and unknown territory on the other side of the ocean?

What can we learn from these brave Chinese who would not give up after being refused again and again? What does the large-scale immigration today have in common with the first-generation immigration?

These stories that go through/beyond the space and time are extremely appealing to Southern People Weekly which, with “ keeping a record of our fate” as its mission, endeavor to give accounts of unique stories of Chinese immigrants on the Red Star Line , by finding the right people and based on interviews and records. History can always provide illumination and guide for today.  Now, we try to find the descendents of  Chinese on the Read Star Line and  learn their and their ancestors’ stories, with a hope that these stories will reveal the history and at the same time, provide enlightenment and direction for today’s Chinese who are trying to get rid of anxieties.  After all, over one hundred years ago, the people were more anxious when they began their journey on the vast ocean.

As a responsible enterprise, TESiRO shows great interest in the Red Star Line. At an early time, Mr. Shen Dongjun, the representative of the new generation entrepreneurs, demonstrated his vision and determination to go abroad through the cooperation with the world’s top diamond enterprise and the acquisition of a French wine estate. Now, he turns his attention to he Red Star Line.

In this context, the Southern People Weekly magazine, the Red Star Line Museum and TESiRO will work closely together to search for the decedents of early Chinese immigrants on the Red Star Line with a view to keeping a record of the immigrant ancestors’ fate, which is also to record our own fate.

Anyone, who has access to any information and news concerning the Chinese immigrants carried by the Red Star Line and about the descendents of these immigrants, is welcomed to  contact us:
