克利的一幅名为“年轻的天使”的画中展现出一个天使，看起来好象正要从某些他寄予沉思的事物上离开。他的眼睛在凝视，他的嘴巴在张开，他的双翼在伸展。这就是人所描绘的“历史的天使”。他的脸转向过去。在我们感知到一连串事件的地方，他看到的是一个单个的灾难。该灾难正将残骸不停地堆积起来，逼近到他的脚前。天使想停下来，唤醒死者，将已被粉碎的整合起来。但是，暴风从天堂里吹过来，滞留在他的双翼中，力量如此狂烈，以至于天使不能再合上双翼。暴风不可抵挡地驱动他去向他所背对的未来，而他面前的废墟堆正在向天空增长。这暴风就是我们所称的“进步”。

A Klee painting named ‘Angelus Novus’ shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing in from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such a violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.
