Thank you!

Mr. Shui: Now let’s welcome our ambassador onto the stage! (Mr. Hou rose from his guest seat and walked to the stage from the left. He walked to the center and stood at the platform. He posed for pictures and the audience applauded.)
Mr. Hou: (joking with Mr. Shui) hi, buddy, let’s see who jumps higher, not who talks better!
(Mr. Shui laughed and the audience burst out laughing.)
Opening: 1min
The Theme of Speech Part 1: What makes a champion?(3 min)
This is the question that sets me thinking, “Who is the master of our destiny?” This is a question that probably confuses us most. Do you choose your own destiny, or does your destiny choose you? Or, from another perspective, do you actively choose to be what you are today, or just passively let your destiny come?
Most champions believe that they choose their own destiny, that they are the master of it. But in society there are far more people who do not seem to be champions. Most of them believe that they are chosen by miserable fortunes. Sensible people might look at it as an interactive process which involves interaction and cause-and-effect relationship on both sides. When you strive to create and change your destiny, and if you succeed in it, you will try harder, your success will be greater, you will be in a positive cycle of success; but if you fail, most often after several times, you will be discouraged, you will give up, and you will fall into a negative cycle of failure.
Story of misfortune
July 1st the World Children’s Day is the happiest day for children all around the world. But on that day at the age of nine, I lost my happiness. It was my destiny that I was hit by a train and lost my left leg. Destiny took me.
I saw my lost leg just beside me, but I couldn’t grasp it. I saw my broken skin, blood, bones, marrow…as the train left. I lay beside the railway track facing the blue sky. People crowded around me. I felt at that moment how insignificant I was. I wished to fly instead of lying on the ground. For a nine-year-old, it was disaster, horror, collapse, torture…
Story of torture
When I was young my family was in poverty. My artificial leg was of bad quality, and I walked uneasily with loud noise. I was afraid to be seen walking. When I first went out with my artificial leg, I met a boy when passing the beach. He laughed at me and stood in my way. He said that I could only pass after being thrown over by him.
When I went to shops playing beautiful music, I was afraid of the noise of my artificial leg, which made many customers look at me. I was embarrassed.
When I rode my bicycle I came across a classmate and stopped to chat with him on the roadside. At that time in North China, there were deep drains on the roadside. We talked with great joy as I showed my classmate that I was able to ride my bicycle using my artificial leg. I was so overjoyed that I forgot I had lost my leg and should rely on my artificial leg. As a result, I fell off the road into the drain. I had to crawl on my own until I got out, and at that time I wished that such things would never happen. Nevertheless, I still had to face the embarrassing reality.
Conclusion of the story
However, it was exactly when I lost my leg that I began to receive something, attention and care from people.
Now, when people stared at my artificial leg on the road, I would think that they would like to know more about me.
After the accident many people around came to see what had happened and took me to hospital. Years later, I became a three-time champion of the Paralympics. As the International Paralympic Committee Ambassador, I visited the handicapped children after the Sichuan earthquake and did my best to promote the Olympic Spirit. I would like to tell the handicapped people all over the world, that my own experience is proof that destiny can be overcome. Everybody can become champion! We can be the master of our own destiny!
My fellow friends, please give your applause to the strong handicapped people all over the world! Encourage them! They will hear it!
(Applause…)
The Theme of Speech Part 2: How to make a champion?(3 min)
Three keywords: belief, will and action.
It means firm belief, strong will and vigorous action.
1.
Story of hesitation
Conclusion of the story
Worrying too much would hinder your chance of success.
2.
Story
Conclusion of the story
We see all the things of this universe from our own perspective. Each person has a different vision of the world. If you firmly believe that “If I am not the champion, who will be”, then you will have a greater chance of success!
So do you want to be champion? Who won’t?
If you really want to, then your determination to change the circumstances will lead you to success. If you only say you want to succeed, but you hesitate, or worry about personal gains and losses, or lack the strong determination, or are unable to control yourself, then your longing for success is not sincere, and you are doomed to fail!
Consequently, what is the root cause of success and
failure?
3.
Story for discussion
The winter holiday had come. All our teachers, classmates and coaches were away on holiday. I was alone training at the Sports Institute of Harbin. In the dormitory building there was only a guard, me and a little mouse.
I had gone through vigorous training for seven months away from home, but I didn’t have enough money to buy the train ticket to return. It would take me 8 hours to go home by train. It often snowed heavily in winter, and it would be too hard for me to stand in line waiting to buy the train ticket in such weather. Sometimes there were only standing tickets left, and I had to stand on the train for 8 hours to get home. So I didn’t go home often.
As the New Year approached, the school dining hall was closed. So were the restaurants outside school. Everyone was busy preparing for the festival. If I went out to buy something to eat, I had to walk a long way in snow, which would be too painful as I would fall easily and broke my artificial leg. So I had instant noodles together with brined vegetables and rarely walked out of the school.
On the afternoon before New Year’s Day, I still kept on training. After the training ended, I was exhausted. It was snowing and I found a bag of instant noodles left, so I wouldn’t have to go out for dinner. I lay on my upper bed and gradually fell asleep. Then a creak woke me up. I looked at the place where the sound came from, and a picture popped into my eyes.
It was the little mouse, eating the only noodles I would have on New Year’s Eve. A beam of afternoon sunlight danced through the windows to touch him, and he was looking at me with his twinkling eyes while eating the noodles.
The next day would be New Year’s Day, and there would be no place open to sell food to me. Though I was quite hungry after the vigorous training, and the little mouse was eating my only food, I didn’t chase the mouse away. He was the only one accompanying me and I was grateful to him.
Conclusion of the story
What kind of person is a champion? He must be the one who knows balance. He would settle down his mind before dealing with his affairs.
The Theme of Speech Part 3: the essence of championship (2 min)
Still we need to get back to our theme: who is the master, we or our destiny?
My conclusion is, man is still the master of his own destiny!
Then why do you dislike your own destiny? If you are the master, shouldn’t you change you destiny, to be the one that you like?
You should!
But you won’t!
You won’t give up your vice, your sloth, greed, hatred, mischief, envy, pride, bitterness, treachery, evil, selfishness, suspicion or such deadly sins.
You won’t commit yourself to philanthropy, suffer disgrace or advance to your goal. Your only wish, which is to have a good fortune, reveals only your lust and selfishness. It won’t work in this way.
Take a look at champions from all walks of life, you’ll find that most of them are of high virtues and have done great contribution to society and the public.
So do you want to make a change to “have a good destiny”?
Then give others your charitableness and high virtue; give others your fidelity, dedication, industry, wisdom and courage; give others your spirit of sincere kindness and tolerance.
Only to give rather than ask for reward or result; only for the sake of others rather than oneself; do it whole-heartedly and peacefully; reward yourself back to the society.
To give everything is to receive everything. The more you give, the more you receive.
Keep on giving with patience, you destiny will take an unbelievable change for the better.
Now it’s time for conclusion, in fact, the conclusion is quite simple, “You are the master of your own destiny!”
“However, are you a competent master?!”
Conclusion
If you need motivation, welcome to attend the Beijing Summer Olympics on August 8th!
If you still need guidance, then on September 6th, Hou Bin would be awaiting you at the Beijing Paralympics!
Friends from the whole world, welcome to the Beijing Paralympics!
Thank you!
