If they can do it, you can do it.

心态:If other people can do it, then I can do it.

Now give you five minutes. You should make a decisionHow many scores do you want to get? You must do it in detail.

If we can do it, you can also do it.

Most people in life have no idea what they want. But worsea few people know what they want but don’t do anything about it. They just sit down to hope, or say, “some day honey will do this.” Some day is now. Some day is here. This course is a chance for you to commit to absolutely turning someday into today. There is nothing for free in this world. You need to pay for it. You must do something to it. Or it won’t come to you.

Step by Step

No matter who you are, no matter how good you think you are, you all need a coach,to remind you, encourage you and support you.                                    ---Bill Gates

(Abraham Lincoln) 1809-1865

I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards.

Most folks are about as happy asthey make up their minds to be.

I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed but I am bound to live up to what light I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, stand with him whilehe is right and part with him when he goes wrong.

When I was in my 20s, I saw my very first psychotherapy client. I was a Ph.D. student in clinical psychology at Berkeley. She was a 26-year-old woman named Alex. Now Alex walked into her first session wearing jeans and a big slouchy top, and she dropped onto the couch in my office and kicked off her flats and told me she was there to talk about guy problems. Now when I heard this, I was so relieved. My classmate got an arsonist for her first client. (Laughter) And I got a twentysomething who wanted to talk about boys. This I thought I could handle.

But I didn't handle it. With the funny stories that Alex would bring to session, it was easy for me just to nod my head while we kicked the can down the road. "Thirty's the new 20," Alex would say, and as far as I could tell, she was right. Work happened later, marriage happened later, kids happened later, even death happened later. Twentysomethings like Alex and I had nothing but time.

But before long, my supervisor pushed me to push Alex about her love life. I pushed back.

I said, "Sure, she's dating down, she's sleeping with a knucklehead, but it's not like she's going to marry the guy."

And then my supervisor said, "Not yet, but she might marry the next one. Besides, the best time to work on Alex's marriage is before she has one."

That's what psychologists call an "Aha!" moment. That was the moment I realized, 30 is not the new 20. Yes, people settle down later than they used to, but that didn't make Alex's 20s a developmental downtime. That made Alex's 20s a developmental sweet spot, and we were sitting there blowing it. That was when I realized that this sort of benign neglect was a real problem, and it had real consequences, not just for Alex and her love life but for the careers and the families and the futures of twentysomethings everywhere.

There are 50 million twentysomethings in the United States right now. We're talking about 15 percent of the population, or 100 percent if you consider that no one's getting through adulthood without going through their 20s first.

Raise your hand if you're in your 20s. I really want to see some twentysomethings here. Oh, yay! Y'all's awesome. If you work with twentysomethings, you love a twentysomething, you're losing sleep over twentysomethings, I want to see — Okay. Awesome, twentysomethings really matter.

So I specialize in twentysomethings because I believe that every single one of those 50 million twentysomethings deserves to know what psychologists, sociologists, neurologists and fertility specialists already know: that claiming your 20s is one of the simplest, yet most transformative, things you can do for work, for love, for your happiness, maybe even for the world.

This is not my opinion. These are the facts. We know that 80 percent of life's most defining moments take place by age 35. That means that eight out of 10 of the decisions and experiences and "Aha!" moments that make your life what it is will have happened by your mid-30s. People who are over 40, don't panic. This crowd is going to be fine, I think. We know that the first 10 years of a career has an exponential impact on how much money you're going to earn. We know that more than half of Americans are married or are living with or dating their future partner by 30. We know that the brain caps off its second and last growth spurt in your 20s as it rewires itself for adulthood, which means that whatever it is you want to change about yourself, now is the time to change it. We know that personality changes more during your 20s than at any other time in life, and we know that female fertility peaks at age 28, and things get tricky after age 35. So your 20s are the time to educate yourself about your body and your options.

So when we think about child development, we all know that the first five years are a critical period for language and attachment in the brain. It's a time when your ordinary, day-to-day life has an inordinate impact on who you will become. But what we hear less about is that there's such a thing as adult development, and our 20s are that critical period of adult development.

But this isn't what twentysomethings are hearing. Newspapers talk about the changing timetable of adulthood. Researchers call the 20s an extended adolescence. Journalists coin silly nicknames for twentysomethings like "twixters" and "kidults." It's true. As a culture, we have trivialized what is actually the defining decade of adulthood.

Leonard Bernstein said that to achieve great things, you need a plan and not quite enough time. Isn't that true? So what do you think happens when you pat a twentysomething on the head and you say, "You have 10 extra years to start your life"? Nothing happens. You have robbed that person of his urgency and ambition, and absolutely nothing happens.

And then every day, smart, interesting twentysomethings like you or like your sons and daughters come into my office and say things like this: "I know my boyfriend's no good for me, but this relationship doesn't count. I'm just killing time." Or they say, "Everybody says as long as I get started on a career by the time I'm 30, I'll be fine."

But then it starts to sound like this: "My 20s are almost over, and I have nothing to show for myself. I had a better résumé the day after I graduated from college."

And then it starts to sound like this: "Dating in my 20s was like musical chairs. Everybody was running around and having fun, but then sometime around 30 it was like the music turned off and everybody started sitting down. I didn't want to be the only one left standing up, so sometimes I think I married my husband because he was the closest chair to me at 30."

Where are the twentysomethings here? Do not do that.

Okay, now that sounds a little flip, but make no mistake, the stakes are very high. When a lot has been pushed to your 30s, there is enormous thirtysomething pressure to jump-start a career, pick a city, partner up, and have two or three kids in a much shorter period of time. Many of these things are incompatible, and as research is just starting to show, simply harder and more stressful to do all at once in our 30s.

The post-millennial midlife crisis isn't buying a red sports car. It's realizing you can't have that career you now want. It's realizing you can't have that child you now want, or you can't give your child a sibling. Too many thirtysomethings and fortysomethings look at themselves, and at me, sitting across the room, and say about their 20s, "What was I doing? What was I thinking?"

I want to change what twentysomethings are doing and thinking.

Here's a story about how that can go. It's a story about a woman named Emma. At 25, Emma came to my office because she was, in her words, having an identity crisis. She said she thought she might like to work in art or entertainment, but she hadn't decided yet, so she'd spent the last few years waiting tables instead. Because it was cheaper, she lived with a boyfriend who displayed his temper more than his ambition. And as hard as her 20s were, her early life had been even harder. She often cried in our sessions, but then would collect herself by saying, "You can't pick your family, but you can pick your friends."

Well one day, Emma comes in and she hangs her head in her lap, and she sobbed for most of the hour. She'd just bought a new address book, and she'd spent the morning filling in her many contacts, but then she'd been left staring at that empty blank that comes after the words "In case of emergency, please call ... ." She was nearly hysterical when she looked at me and said, "Who's going to be there for me if I get in a car wreck? Who's going to take care of me if I have cancer?"

Now in that moment, it took everything I had not to say, "I will." But what Emma needed wasn't some therapist who really, really cared. Emma needed a better life, and I knew this was her chance. I had learned too much since I first worked with Alex to just sit there while Emma's defining decade went parading by.

So over the next weeks and months, I told Emma three things that every twentysomething, male or female, deserves to hear.

First, I told Emma to forget about having an identity crisis and get some identity capital. By get identity capital, I mean do something that adds value to who you are. Do something that's an investment in who you might want to be next. I didn't know the future of Emma's career, and no one knows the future of work, but I do know this: Identity capital begets identity capital. So now is the time for that cross-country job, that internship, that startup you want to try. I'm not discounting twentysomething exploration here, but I am discounting exploration that's not supposed to count, which, by the way, is not exploration. That's procrastination. I told Emma to explore work and make it count.

Second, I told Emma that the urban tribe is overrated. Best friends are great for giving rides to the airport, but twentysomethings who huddle together with like-minded peers limit who they know, what they know, how they think, how they speak, and where they work. That new piece of capital, that new person to date almost always comes from outside the inner circle. New things come from what are called our weak ties, our friends of friends of friends. So yes, half of twentysomethings are un- or under-employed. But half aren't, and weak ties are how you get yourself into that group. Half of new jobs are never posted, so reaching out to your neighbor's boss is how you get that un-posted job. It's not cheating. It's the science of how information spreads.

Last but not least, Emma believed that you can't pick your family, but you can pick your friends. Now this was true for her growing up, but as a twentysomething, soon Emma would pick her family when she partnered with someone and created a family of her own. I told Emma the time to start picking your family is now. Now you may be thinking that 30 is actually a better time to settle down than 20, or even 25, and I agree with you. But grabbing whoever you're living with or sleeping with when everyone on Facebook starts walking down the aisle is not progress. The best time to work on your marriage is before you have one, and that means being as intentional with love as you are with work. Picking your family is about consciously choosing who and what you want rather than just making it work or killing time with whoever happens to be choosing you.

So what happened to Emma? Well, we went through that address book, and she found an old roommate's cousin who worked at an art museum in another state. That weak tie helped her get a job there. That job offer gave her the reason to leave that live-in boyfriend. Now, five years later, she's a special events planner for museums. She's married to a man she mindfully chose. She loves her new career, she loves her new family, and she sent me a card that said, "Now the emergency contact blanks don't seem big enough."

Now Emma's story made that sound easy, but that's what I love about working with twentysomethings. They are so easy to help. Twentysomethings are like airplanes just leaving LAX, bound for somewhere west. Right after takeoff, a slight change in course is the difference between landing in Alaska or Fiji. Likewise, at 21 or 25 or even 29, one good conversation, one good break, one good TED Talk, can have an enormous effect across years and even generations to come.

So here's an idea worth spreading to every twentysomething you know. It's as simple as what I learned to say to Alex. It's what I now have the privilege of saying to twentysomethings like Emma every single day: Thirty is not the new 20, so claim your adulthood, get some identity capital, use your weak ties, pick your family. Don't be defined by what you didn't know or didn't do. You're deciding your life right now. Thank you. (Applause)

Track 37

Another company that is mentioedn is IBM. It all started with a guy by the name of Top Watson, who worked for a competing company called NCR, got fired by the CEO they also. He got so mad that he said I am gonna start a company that will defeat you someday. So you see, welcome frustration. I get to tell you. As you go through the next thirty days you may have some point you feel frustrated. Or you will feel upset. Or You feel Gosh, you know I don’t it is gonna work or last for ever. Commit and follow through. I got to tell you something. When I got frustrated I learn to get excited, I learn to littlely condition myself so that frustration create excitement. You know why? ‘cause when I got frustrated, I know I am about to break through. It means my brain is searching. If I get confused about something, it says I will never learn this. My response to that is hey I am about to learn something. ‘cause my brain is searching for a new answer. If it keep search, it gonna come up with one. I believe emotions many of us consider it negative like frustration, rejection, pain can be a great friend ‘cause they can drive us to success. You know what? I think one of the things that happen to a lot of people when they get successful is they get super ??  It’s like they work so hard for the success. They now find all of a sudden they don’t change, they don’t value the behavior. They are kind of want to stay the way things are. They are getting incredible conserved and they miss out of the juice of life.  Stay out of trap. Listen when people succeed, they turn to the party. When they fail, they turn to ponder. Now the pondering many times creates the great success in life. (325)

Track 38

Just remember, it is impossible to fail. If you try something, and it doesn’t work. Just try something else and learn something from what you just did. As long as you learn something, you’ve succeeded. Something else I want to remind you of as well. And that sometimes people say, Wow, gosh. I am doing these exercises. I know I need to be better shape physically, emotionally and psychologically, don’t feel confident. But I want to work on my career. I want to take my business to next level. I want a business program. Let me tell what. Personal power is one of the most powerful business programs. ‘cause it dealt with the source of all your business. It is you. (120)

Track 39

When you are in better shape, you settling your negotiate more effectively. When you are in better shape, your creativity flows. When you are in better shape, you better manage your people. That’s why if you saw the inf  which how as soon you got to this program. Then you saw people like for example Bill Farway. Farway industrious endorsing this program, saying this is one of the best business that ever went through. Oh, that’s because Bill became a billionaire before the age of forty all by using this personal power type of techniques, such way a big endorser. And for the last ten years I’ve consult with him using these tools. And they got 40,000 employees through the room which is one of his companies. So I want you know this is very business audient. Or Bill Nixon, you know he is a turn around expect for major corporations. You know in the early eighty he took on a major corporation that is losing a million dollars a day. And turned it around so that within four years was doing more than 4 billion dollars revenue in the highest net vet turn in the history in the company. So I want you to know that these people endorse it ‘cause it works. If you are a little bit skapital , I understand that. But understand changing yourself is the first pace to change your career to change your business. So first space, make you a better leader. And those are the tools here. And you also find including here some of the tools I model from General Swart Kof for example. I have had the privilege now being with Mr. Gorbachev. And as I pull tools to him I have included some of those tools in this program as well. Some of them are very simple. So what’s my message here? My message is let’s you and I begin a journey now, a journey in the personal power. Will you able to think what you want, take action immediately, model the most successful people. Know weather it was working, keep changing your approach until you succeed. With that kind of persistence, with that kind of commitment nothing can stop you. I am here to tell you from experience. My life is now so far beyond what my wildest dream used to be is a joke. And the difference is not intelligence is not so much skill, is a few distinctions and massive action, and the ability to manage my emotions so I don’t fear the failures any more. I offer you the opportunity. So commit for the next thirty days, to listen to one tape a day. It’s gonna take you maybe forty five minutes and maybe fifteen minutes to do your exercise. But please every single day. And by doing this cancertily one day after another after another you will get the power of momentum working for you. And you will begin to stake your success one after another until it totally becomes habits. That’s the whole purpose of this program why design it this way. So you develop a habit that in the future takes you to direction you want to go effortlessly. So it’s critical not to miss a day. So how was it set up? You will work Monday to Friday with you and I communicate together. And then Saturday and Sunday you can listen to your sprimnors and then Monday to Friday again, all the way through to the thirty-day plan. If you will do that each day and fuel your brain and emotions in your mind and you allow yourself to be challenged. Thirty days from now, you will have a sense of power and pride. This is beyond what you expect right now and I imagine that you have high expectations. So let’s get to it. After every one in these tapes I am gonna give you an exercise you actually use your person power, you use something you’ve learned, some of the exercises will be really simple. But remember most people fail in life because they major and minor things. Most people don’t realize that the things they are making is real big are important. The success is simple. But it does require certain consistent things each day. So here is your assignment today. And I want you to take these assignments and please do it. (736)

Track 40

You should have in front of you what we call a success journal. For most of my adult life I have been keeping journals. That is each day, and sometimes every other day various times. Writing down the things I’ve learned from books from tapes from going to seminar so I could capture those things. Because I’ve find out long ago that all you do is hear something. Within three days you forget eight percent of them. That’s why listening to something again and again is so useful. In addition, I’ve found that if you listen to something and you write down certain key elements of it. Your memory attention will go up as much as 75 to 90 percent. Plus, I believe if your life is worth living it’s worth recording. So I challenge you to really keep a journal. And we are gonna have you do a assignment’s journal, but you also over these next thirty days might write your thought. That’s about how you are doing each day. What you’ve learned. What you are excited about. What break through your having. This is the way it recorded. Otherwise it’s like your children. I know what the many times people come by and say, gosh your son is really growing. And I am not around them so much so I don’t see as much as other people do. But I take a look I go I guess you are right. By having journals I can see how much I’ve grown and you will be able to see how much you’ve grown. I can go back years ago seeing my goals were the kinds of things I was remembering. Just jams of material from people to share with me what would make the difference for their success. And I can read it again and began to apply it. So please keep this success journal for yourself. You lies in anyway you want. But here is what I want you to start with. Right now as this tape ends I want to do your first assignment, really simple. Remember I told you, the way to build muscle so that you will really strong. Start small and build. So we will start with something really simple. I want you to think of two actions you’ve been putting off. Two things you should do, two things you need to do, but you keep putting off. Maybe it’s a phone call or two. Maybe it’s somebody you’ve had some poor communication with and you need to clean it up, you are not doing it. Maybe it’s just going in the house and cleaning it up right now. Maybe it’s some kind of poor you need to do. I don’t know what it is. But right now I want you to think of what two actions you’ve been putting off, that if you would take them now it will increase the quality of your life either. Simply we are just increase the quality of yourself esteem, ‘cause you feel good ‘cause it get you follow through or maybe even more powerfully. (517)

Track 41

What two decisions or two actions you could take right now that would immediately change the quality of life. Maybe it’s to stop smoking. Maybe it’s to limit certain kinds of food. But if you are gonna do something right now those are gonna change your life what are those two actions. And what I want you to do is decide. Remember to decide means to cut off any other possibility to resolve once and for all this is it. There is tremendous power in that. Start with something small of you want and then build. But right now write down two decisions you’ve made. And then take actions on them immediately I mean right now. I mean even before I finish talking here. stop the tape. Pick up the phone and make that call you’ve been waiting for. Do not put it off for another minute. If you are in your car, pick up your car phone. I don’t care what it takes. There is power in momentum. I am a big believer with them. Once you set a goal once you make a decision you should immediately in that moment do something, to start making progress towards you. That way you can’t cap up wait on or get caught up or lose your momentum. So please do it now. I know not all things can be done right now. maybe something you have to do tomorrow morning. But whatever you gonna do make the decision and commit to follow through and then check in tomorrow. ‘cause this is first step to grabbing your personal power. And remember there is no way to fail. You might suspect gosh, what if I do this it doesn’t work, what if I try this it doesn’t happen. What if I scroll up? Then scroll up big. Go for it. Do a big scroll up. ‘cause you will learn something. Hey remember. Success in life is a result of good judgement. Good judgement is usually a result of experience. Experience is usually a result of bad judgement. So if you get some bad judement it doesn’t work out you will learn something. It will make you more successful in the future. Just go for it. Don’t be afraid, make it happen. You may say well, that’s such a little thing to do I will do it later. If it’s little then do it now. Don’t put it off, ok? I’m on your side. Hey what I’m trying to be here for you is a good coach. You know I don’t care how successful you are we all need a coach. And I have lots of coaches around me. Life by yourselves we can’t dref sometimes, not always but sometimes. Hey think about it. Gravity is automatic. You don’t have to work on gravity. But if you want to succeed you get to excel your will and take action against gravity. In the absence of light there was darkness. So what I am trying to be is a good coach comes by and hand you the map so they are already in your hands so strike these thing. Take action now. That’s the power of this. So follow through on your exercise, open right now you success journal write down two decisions you are gonna make two new actions you are gonna take that could change your life. and then tomorrow we will get together again for thirty minutes. And during those thirty minutes I am gonna show you what is the controlling force in your whole life. How to absolutely understand what makes you do what you do, and how to change it. Till then follow through. Live today with passion. I’ll see you tomorrow. (622)
