I’ll give you the example from the paper I was editing at the time. It’s not an atmospheric science paper, but it still demonstrates what I mean:
In particular, we focus our contribution on the following three issues and associated hypotheses: (1) facilitation in established alpine communities; (2) facilitation in alpine communities migrating to higher elevations; (3) facilitation along latitudinal gradients; (4) facilitation and the long-term buffering effect of alpine nurse plants.
Here is the list of points: (1) Use a proper minus sign for negative values. Do not use a hyphen; (2) An en rule should be used to indicate a range or relationship. For example, “the east–west direction”, or “the mid–high latitudes”; (3) Only hyphenate if not doing so makes the message of the sentence difficult to interpret. Over-hyphenation can make the text equally difficult to read.
If the content of each numbered point starts to get any longer than the above, I would recommend separating out the list, i.e.,

(3)
