夏鹏老师的保留意见是觉得翻译成你不必如此善良会更贴切，但如此一来有悖于我们从小接受的教育。啧啧啧，伤脑筋！
普利策奖、美国国家图书奖获得者，玛丽·奥利弗。她的诗透出对生命真挚的关怀，以及对自然细腻的描写，给人一种抵御沉沦的力量。

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

Oliver这首诗的开头”You do not have to be good.”不管是翻译成你不必样样都好，你不必如此温顺，亦或是你不必做个好人，都如此善解人意，像极了在伤心绝望时你的亲密好友在身边安慰你，并告诉你，其实你可以不必如此坚强一样让人感动。
You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.”该句诗歌中的on your knees 特别是 through the desert repenting,形象的把我们的思维一下子带入到当时摩西带着以色列人穿越沙漠时的情景。但是Oliver想告诉我们，我们尽可以爱自己所爱，活成自己想要的样子，而无需梏亡在世俗的框架里，变得所谓“优秀”。
”You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.”Animal 动物这个词其实来自拉丁语，词根ani-有灵魂的意思。Oliver希望我们解放我们的内心，跟随我们的内心。而和soft animal张狂而不失优雅的这种用法有异曲同工之妙的是我们十分熟悉的英国诗人西格里夫·萨松很有名的一句话"In me the tiger sniffs the rose.”（心有猛虎，细嗅蔷薇），凶猛的野兽瞬间变得温驯，既有野心又有克制。
在轻声细语的宽慰后，Oliver转而连用三个”Meanwhile”描写大千世界，对于自然，特别是其中鲜为人知的一面，Oliver情有独钟，因为她是自然世界孜孜不倦的向导。
在这个物欲横流的浮躁社会，如果我们停下来片刻，哪怕是为了一些无关紧要的事情，比如几只小鸟在唱歌，我们也许会发现意想不到的快乐。Oliver借返乡野雁wild geese粗砺的叫声告诉自己，也提醒每一个人，即使是在最微小地方和最简单的时刻，生命都是宝贵的，永远值得活下去。
