成年后的雄性三文鱼和雌性三文鱼的体型差异很大，这是由于它们成年所需要的时间不同。

雌性三文鱼一般长得比较大（10-20公斤），吃食时间久、成年晚。

而雄性三文鱼可以在体型较小的时候（1-3公斤）就开始繁殖，所以吃食时间短、成年很快。

人们对这些性别差异背后的遗传机制了解甚少。

这项研究或对三文鱼种群管理产生显著影响，研究在很多三文鱼种群中都发现了更早成年的趋势。

有一个关键基因的不同变种在两种性别中的表达存在差异。大西洋鲑携带的每个基因都有两个等位基因，从父母方各遗传一个版本。

然而VGLL3这个基因在一种性别中的显性在另一种性别中却是隐性的。这种现象被称为从性显性，导致雄性和雌性成熟的速度不同。

此前的研究表明该基因与人类青春期存在关联，所以研究人员推测，三文鱼的从性显性可能在漫长的演化过程中一直是保守的。
