Do the English speak English?

the English  英国人（现在用the British/Britons），后面的动词用复数

English  英语，指语言时前面不加冠词

1. I arrived in London at last.

l 词组：arrive at / in  = reach = get to  到达

l 词组：at last = finally =in the end    最后

2. The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter.

l 词组：on the way home   在回家的路上

         on the way to school  在去上学的路上

3. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well.

l 词组：not only … but … (as well)  不但……而且……

= not only… but (also)   

注意：not only与 but后面的成分必须对等

He not only read the book, but remembered what he had read as well.

e.g. 他不仅长得帅而且人很好。

    He is not only handsome but very kind as well.

4. The porter, however, could not understand me. I repeated my question several times and at last he understood. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly.

5. ‘I am a foreigner,’ I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that!

l 单词：like  prep. 像，像……一样

    e.g. He ran like the wind. 他跑得飞快。(= very fast)

6. The porter and I looked at each other and smiled.

l 词组：each other 互相，与 one another相似， 前者常指两人，后者常指两人以上

7. Then he said something and I understood it. ‘You’ll soon learn English!’ he said. I wonder. In England, each person speaks a different language. The English understand each other, but I don’t understand them! Do they speak English?

英国可以说：the UK / Britain / the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland （全称）（不要说England会引起歧义）
