Diaries written by a White Russian countess fleeing into exile in Germany during World War II tell the daily life of ordinary Germans during the war, the fear they encountered and the hope they held, from the perspective of an exiled aristocrat.

In our life, when we meet with someone who dare not face the problem and tries to avoid it, we will call him “ostrich”(鸵鸟), because the ostrich is often considered as a cowardly animal, which, as is often said, when danger comes, will bury its head in the sand and, very ridiculously, expose all its body to the enemy, believing it is safe to be blind. In fact, however, “ostrich policy” is a myth.
Indeed, ostriches don’t have much guts, but they have mighty defensive weapons---the strong legs, which are powerful enough to strike back at any invading enemy. In addition, they have fearsome claws with as long as 17 centimeters of knife-sharp toes, which are always a nightmare for its enemy.
In reality, ostriches do
occasionally bury their heads in the sand, but that’s by no means
from fear; they instead just want to eat some sand to help digest
the food in the stomach. Ostriches usually feed on juicy plants but
sometimes also eat lizards and other
shellfishes.
To avoid danger, the ostrich does hide, but it buries its whole body, instead of the head, in the sand with only its head sticking out. It is not because they are afraid of danger. Research has shown that the ostrich is able to protect itself by using a strong layer of light created by strong sunlight reflecting off the desert surface and diffusely reflecting off the hot air. It hides its body under the light, and its head is like a periscope watching the enemy’s movements. Once found by the enemy, the ostrich will fight back. With its large body and powerful legs, it could compete with the sharp javelins of the natives, and it could not be killed in a short time by lions or cheetahs.
24. What do you think the first paragraph serve as?
25. What is the most powerful weapon of the ostrich?
26. Which habit of the ostrich is mistaken for “ostrich policy”?
27. In which way will the ostrich avoid danger?
C
Children born in China are bound to lead a much tougher childhood than those in the West. In order not to “lose at the starting line”, Chinese children are forced to learn many extra things: reciting poems, playing the piano, practicing calligraphy, dipping into math… since or even before they are born.
Some elites(精英)returning from the West begin questioning this education and examination system, and advocating Western “happy education”, which, they believe, will free Chinese children from heavy load and return happiness to “the flowers of our motherland”.
However, as they are attacking China’s education system, the West began to rethink of their education system and decided to introduce China’s education model.
In 2016, after comparisons, the UK Department of Education decided to fully introduce Chinese mathematics textbooks and some educational models. Why? Because they found 15-year-old middle school students in Britain can’t even use binary multiplication and division, while many Chinese students of the same age are comfortable with analytic functions and ternary first order equations(三元一次方程), and some can even use calculus(微积分)taught in British universities.
This downhill education model leads directly to the consequence that Britain’s top talents are one-tenth that of China.
So does the US education model.
For one thing, the average age of Chinese space scientists is no more than 40, compared with the average age of 55 in America. Sun Zezhou, the chief engineer, sent Chang’e-3 into space at only 43; the team of the “Mozi” quantum satellite and the “Wukong” dark matter satellite were 31 on average.
In the decades’ battle between
Chinese and Western education, China won
overall.
28. Why do the elites put forth “happy education”?
B. Because children in the West are much happier.
C. Because children are the
flowers of the
nation.
D. Because China’s education system is imperfect.
29. What led the UK Department of Education to the decision to introduce Chinese mathematics textbooks?
30. In what way is the article developed?
31. What is the author’s attitude to China’s present education system?
D
You may be familiar with such terms as “IQ”, “EQ”, or even “BQ”, but have you ever heard of “AQ”, or Adversity Quotient?
It’s a new term used to describe the ability to withstand setbacks and overcome difficulties in the face of difficult situations. For example, when one faced with stress and pressure deals with them bravely and actively, he is seen as high in “adversity quotient”.
In the workplace today, the one with high AQ, instead of IQ, EQ or BQ, proves far more likely to succeed.
How can parents develop kids’ AQ then?
◆Don’t exaggerate the negative impact
When children come across setbacks, parents should not blame them or exaggerate the impact of setbacks. Instead, they should analyze them carefully and help find ways to overcome them.
◆Teach children to wait
Not everything will have an immediate outcome. Parents should appropriately “delay” the child’s request and let the child learn to wait, which is a great ability to cope with adversity.
◆Teach children to accept reality
There are many good things, but we always see the bad side of life. When the reality turns out to be a bit unsatisfactory, teach your child to accept it.
◆Allow children to suffer a little
Parents should not only give their children love, but also make some necessary rules for them to obey. Meanwhile, praise and punishment are also necessary. Allowing the children to take care of themselves, to be independent, and to suffer is good for their future.
◆Develop children’s interests
A persistent interest is beneficial to a person especially when he encounters difficulties and setbacks.
Do remember: While developing children’s AQ, it is not the same as deliberately creating difficulties or turning everything against them to harm their self-esteem, but it’s developing a mentally strong child.
32. What kind of man will we view him as if he is easy to get along with?
C. A man with high BQ.
33. Which “Q” plays the most important role in achieving success in the workplace today?
34. Which of the following is what the author argues against?
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
B. To clarify ways to develop children’s AQ.

Being short is annoying,
especially to men, for it often brings negative influence to their
work, life and communication.
Short men will look smart when
dressed in form of neat and pleasing simplicity, while one dress on
top of another will make you look larger and therefore shorter. A
short jacket isn’t a good choice either, for it will expose your
fatal weakness ---- short and thick legs.
.
.
A. A jacket which just touches hips is advisable.
B. Always wearing good clothing, however, helps a lot.
C. A short man should be particular about his appearance.
D. Neat hair makes a short man look much more charming.
E. This way, your waistline appears and you look straight and taller.
F. A young man of small stature is often easily mistaken for a child.
G. Yet making correct choices of clothing can improve your images.
