In our life, when we meet with someone who dare not face the problem and tries to avoid it, we will call him “ostrich”(鸵鸟), because the ostrich is often considered as a cowardly animal, which, as is often said, when danger comes, will bury its head in the sand and, very ridiculously, expose all its body to the enemy, believing it is safe to be blind. In fact, however, “ostrich policy” is a myth.

Indeed, ostriches don’t have much guts, but they have mighty defensive weapons---the strong legs, which are powerful enough to strike back at any invading enemy. In addition, they have fearsome claws with as long as 17 centimeters of knife-sharp toes, which are always a nightmare for its enemy.

In reality, ostriches do occasionally bury their heads in the sand, but that’s by no means from fear; they instead just want to eat some sand to help digest the food in the stomach. Ostriches usually feed on juicy plants but sometimes also eat lizards and other shellfishes.

To avoid danger, the ostrich does hide, but it buries its whole body, instead of the head, in the sand with only its head sticking out. It is not because they are afraid of danger. Research has shown that the ostrich is able to protect itself by using a strong layer of light created by strong sunlight reflecting off the desert surface and diffusely reflecting off the hot air. It hides its body under the light, and its head is like a periscope watching the enemy’s movements. Once found by the enemy, the ostrich will fight back. With its large body and powerful legs, it could compete with the sharp javelins of the natives, and it could not be killed in a short time by lions or cheetahs.

24. What do you think the first paragraph serve as?

         A. An evidence.           B. An introduction.               C. A joke.              D. A topic

25. What is the most powerful weapon of the ostrich?

         A. Its legs.                  B. Its head.                          C. Its claws.           D. Its knife.

26. Which habit of the ostrich is mistaken for “ostrich policy”?

         A. Burying its head in sand.                                    B. Hunting lizards for food.

         C. Sticking its head out of sand.                               D. Eating sand for digestion.

27. In which way will the ostrich avoid danger?

         A. Hiding its body in the sand.                                B. Hiding its head in the sand.

         C. Running away.                                                  D. Sticking out its head.

C

Children born in China are bound to lead a much tougher childhood than those in the West. In order not to “lose at the starting line”, Chinese children are forced to learn many extra things: reciting poems, playing the piano, practicing calligraphy, dipping into math… since or even before they are born.

Some elites(精英)returning from the West begin questioning this education and examination system, and advocating Western “happy education”, which, they believe, will free Chinese children from heavy load and return happiness to “the flowers of our motherland”.

However, as they are attacking China’s education system, the West began to rethink of their education system and decided to introduce China’s education model.

In 2016, after comparisons, the UK Department of Education decided to fully introduce Chinese mathematics textbooks and some educational models. Why? Because they found 15-year-old middle school students in Britain can’t even use binary multiplication and division, while many Chinese students of the same age are comfortable with analytic functions and ternary first order equations(三元一次方程), and some can even use calculus(微积分)taught in British universities.

This downhill education model leads directly to the consequence that Britain’s top talents are one-tenth that of China.

So does the US education model.

For one thing, the average age of Chinese space scientists is no more than 40, compared with the average age of 55 in America. Sun Zezhou, the chief engineer, sent Chang’e-3 into space at only 43; the team of the “Mozi” quantum satellite and the “Wukong” dark matter satellite were 31 on average.

In the decades’ battle between Chinese and Western education, China won overall.

28. Why do the elites put forth “happy education”?

         A. Because children in China are much loaded.

B. Because children in the West are much happier.

C. Because children are the flowers of the nation.

D. Because China’s education system is imperfect.

29. What led the UK Department of Education to the decision to introduce Chinese mathematics textbooks?

         A. The result of comparisons.                           B. Small numbers of top talents.

         C. Poor academic achievements.                       D. Advantages of the textbooks.

30. In what way is the article developed?

         A. Narration.       B. Argumentation.                C. Comparison       D. Discussion.

31. What is the author’s attitude to China’s present education system?

         A. Objective.        B. Ambiguous.                     C. Critical.             D. Approval.

D

You may be familiar with such terms as “IQ”, “EQ”, or even “BQ”, but have you ever heard of “AQ”, or Adversity Quotient?

It’s a new term used to describe the ability to withstand setbacks and overcome difficulties in the face of difficult situations. For example, when one faced with stress and pressure deals with them bravely and actively, he is seen as high in “adversity quotient”.

In the workplace today, the one with high AQ, instead of IQ, EQ or BQ, proves far more likely to succeed.

How can parents develop kids’ AQ then?

Don’t exaggerate the negative impact

When children come across setbacks, parents should not blame them or exaggerate the impact of setbacks. Instead, they should analyze them carefully and help find ways to overcome them.

Teach children to wait

Not everything will have an immediate outcome. Parents should appropriately “delay” the child’s request and let the child learn to wait, which is a great ability to cope with adversity.

Teach children to accept reality

There are many good things, but we always see the bad side of life. When the reality turns out to be a bit unsatisfactory, teach your child to accept it.

Allow children to suffer a little

Parents should not only give their children love, but also make some necessary rules for them to obey. Meanwhile, praise and punishment are also necessary. Allowing the children to take care of themselves, to be independent, and to suffer is good for their future.

Develop children’s interests

A persistent interest is beneficial to a person especially when he encounters difficulties and setbacks.

Do remember: While developing children’s AQ, it is not the same as deliberately creating difficulties or turning everything against them to harm their self-esteem, but it’s developing a mentally strong child.

32. What kind of man will we view him as if he is easy to get along with?

         A. A man with high IQ.                                   B. A man with high EQ.

C. A man with high BQ.                                  D. A man with high AQ.

33. Which “Q” plays the most important role in achieving success in the workplace today?

         A. IQ.                 B. EQ.                                C. BQ.                  D. AQ.

34. Which of the following is what the author argues against?

         A. Hurting children’s self-esteem on purpose.

         B. Giving children necessary punishments.

         C. Delaying to meet the child’s request.

         D. Helping children get out of trouble.

35. What is the main purpose of the passage?

         A. To make clear what Adversity Quotient is.

B. To clarify ways to develop children’s AQ.

         C. To explain differences between relevant terms.

     D. To advocate the importance of a new concept.

第二节  (5小题;每小题2分,满分10

       根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Being short is annoying, especially to men, for it often brings negative influence to their work, life and communication.   36   For the man built both short and strong, specific styles will flatter, while others will give the unfortunate impression of a man put into clothes either too large or too small.

Short men will look smart when dressed in form of neat and pleasing simplicity, while one dress on top of another will make you look larger and therefore shorter. A short jacket isn’t a good choice either, for it will expose your fatal weakness ---- short and thick legs.   37   Better match a loose-fitting coat with tight trousers. While wearing a shirt or T-shirt outside, better tuck it into the trousers.   38

.  39   Therefore, a suit of a darker colour, especially formal dresses of good-quality materials, is strongly recommended, so that you will look more mature. For example, a purple suit with a light yellow shirt, trousers of a similar colour and a nice tie can very well turn you into a mature and experienced man.

.   40   Imagine: what a small man with wild hairs and a dirty shirt would look like, no matter how fit and well-cut his clothes are. So as a short man you should always keep your hair neatly combed, your face clean shaven, and your shoes brightly polished.

A. A jacket which just touches hips is advisable.

B. Always wearing good clothing, however, helps a lot.

C. A short man should be particular about his appearance.

D. Neat hair makes a short man look much more charming.

E. This way, your waistline appears and you look straight and taller.

F. A young man of small stature is often easily mistaken for a child.

G. Yet making correct choices of clothing can improve your images.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Polar bears have no natural enemies in the Arctic Circle, but Eskimos can catch them  61_   (easy).

They kill a seal, pour  62  (it) blood into a bucket, and place a two-edged dagger in the middle of the blood. The temperature is so low that the blood quickly solidifies, with the dagger in the middle of the blood, like a super-sized ice bar. They pour  63  “ice bar” out onto the icy field.

The polar bear has a characteristic: bloodthirsty. His nose is so powerful that he can smell blood miles away. When he smells the blood ice bar  64  (throw) on the ice, he quickly arrives and starts licking the tasty bar. Licking on and on, his tongue grows numb, but in no case will he give up such delicious food. Suddenly, the smell of blood becomes  65  (good)---fresher and warmer. He licks more and more. Actually, he is now sucking his own blood: the dagger cuts open his tongue, blood  66_ (flow) out. Now, his tongue is already numb and  67  (sense), but his nose is still sensitive, so he keeps on licking. The tongue  68  (cover) with cuts, but he is still greedy for blood  69  he loses too much blood and faints. At that time, the Eskimos go over and catch the polar bear  70  any effort.

Text 3

W: By next year I will have finished law school. I plan on finding a job. What about you?

M: I’d like to travel around the country before I get a job.

Text 4

M: So I’ve cleaned the living room, the bedrooms except for…

W: I know. The toilets! Don’t worry. I’ll clean them.

Text 5

M: I’m going to book a train ticket 60 days in advance because it happens to be Spring Festival.

W: Don’t worry. There will be extra trains added to the original schedule.

Text 6

W: Tom, please help me. I didn’t wear the right clothes today.

M: Lucy, what do you mean? You look beautiful.

W: No, I need help. The weather keeps changing today.

M: Oh, I know. This morning was really cold.

W: Right, so I wore a sweater. Now the sun is shining and it’s hot.

M: How can I help you?

W: It’s fall now, but do you still sell T-shirts?

M: Yes. They are over there. You can look at them.

Text 7

W: Excuse me. May I meet Mr. Robbins?

M: Is that Mr. Robbins in the marketing department?

W: Yes, it is.

M: Oh, his office isn’t on this floor. We are on the seventh floor. So you must go upstairs for three more.

W: What’s his office number?

M: I don’t know it exactly. I only know it is next to the manager’s room.

W: Tommy didn’t go to school today. His teacher called me this morning. What should we do about this? Maybe we could give him a little bit of money to pay him to go to school?

M: Pay him? He studies for himself, not for you or me. I’ve got an idea. You should send him to class every morning and after class begins you can go to work.

W: In that way, I’ll be late every day. How about letting him go to school on a school bus?

M: That’s a good idea. Why have I never thought of that?

W: That’s because I went to school for each class when I was at school.

Text 9

M: The summer holiday is coming. What will you do during such a long holiday?

W: I’m planning to stay on the farm.

M: What will you do during this time?

W: I will be busy. There are many things I have to do.

M: Tell me what they are. Maybe I can lend you a hand.

W: Oh, thanks. If I tell you what I will do, you will never offer to help.

M: Well, come on, tell me.

W: In the morning, I’m going to work with my father on the farm. I have to drive the cows into the grassland, feed the pigs after getting some food from the fields, and then collect the tomatoes from the vegetable garden. In the afternoon, I will help my mother in the small shop. You know, the busiest time for the shop is the summer holiday.

M: Oh, that’s a lot. But it sounds interesting. I’d really like to join you, as you know, my holiday is always boring. I have nothing to do all day long but watch TV.

W: That would be nice of you to help me. We can also play in our free time.

M: Good idea.
