Continue with the story: The lady or the tiger
Step 1: Warming-up:
Everyone has to make some important choices in their life. What are some important choices that you or your family have made? How have those choices affected your life?
Step 2: Fast-reading
In the story, a young man must make a very important choice. It is truly a life or death decision. What’s the choice?
Step 3: Careful reading
Read the story and answer the following questions:
1. How many characters are there in the story? Who are they?
2. How did the king do with the criminals?
3. What was behind one of the doors in the king’s arena? What was behind the other door?
4. Why was the king’s arena so popular with the people?
5. With whom did the princess fall in love?
6. Who was the lady behind the door?
Step 4: Deep understanding of the characters and language.
1) Flat and round characters
Depending on how much information is given by the author, characters can be either flat or round. Flat characters seem very simple, as if they could be summed up with only one or two character traits(性格特征). On the other hand, round characters have many different and sometimes even contradictory(矛盾的) character traits. Because they are many-sided(多面的), round characters are capable of doing and saying surprising things.
Question 1: Is the king a flat or round character? Support your answer with details from the story.
Question 2: Is the princess a flat or round character? Support your answer with details from the story.
Question 3: Is the slave a flat or round character? Support your answer with details from the story.
2) Dilemma
A dilemma is a situation in which a person must choose between equal choices. There is no objective way to determine if one choice is better than the other. Most often, the word “dilemma” is used when referring to situations in which both alternatives are equally unpleasant. For example, in “The Lady or the Tiger?”, the princess is faced with a dilemma—either choice she makes will have an unpleasant consequence. Now, fill in the blanks to describe the dilemma the princess faces:
If she directs her lover to the tiger, __________________________________________________
If she directs her lover to the lady, ___________________________________________________
Therefore, both consequences are equally painful to her---she is really facing a dilemma.
3) Language appreciation:
(1) Behind one of the doors was a hungry tiger, the most cruel that could be found.
(2) She was as perfect a match for him as could be found in the land.
(3) Never before had a slave dared to love the daughter of a king!
Step 4: Retell the story, using the questions above.
Step 5: Discuss with your parter: If you were the princess, what would you do?
Step 6: Continue to write the story with at least 150 words.

The Lady or The Tiger
Many years ago there lived a cruel king. This king had a wild and violent imagination, and since he was king, he had the power to make his wishes come true.
The king had heard about the public arena—a place where men and wild animals fight each other. The king decided to use it in a different way—to punish the guilty and reward the innocent. When a man was accused of a serious crime, everyone was invited to gather in the king’s arena. When the king gave a signal, a door would open and the accused man would step out into the arena. Then he could open either door he pleased. No one spoke to him or offered any advice. The choice was his own. Behind one of the doors was a hungry tiger, the most cruel that could be found. If the man opened that door, the tiger immediately tore the man into pieces. That was the punishment! But if he opened the other door, a lady stepped out. She was as perfect a match for him as could be found in the land. And the two people were married at once. It didn’t matter if the man already had a wife and family, or if he was in love with another lady. For as the king often said, “Nothing can stop my wanderful plan of punishing the guilty and rewarding the innocent.
The king was very proud of his way and the plan was popular with the people too. They never knew what they were going to see. Would it be a bloody murder, or a joyful wedding? Just wait and see.
The cruel king had a beautiful daughter who was as wild as her father. She was so wild that she fell in love with one of the king’s servants. And though he was handsome and brave, he was, after all, only a servant. Still, he loved her very dearly.
Their love affair went on happily for many months. And then one day the king happened to discover this. Never before had a slave dared to love the daughter of a king! The young man was immediately thrown into prison and a date was set for his trial in the king’s arena. The young man would be murdered—or married—like other accused men.
From the moment the king had ordered her lover to appear in the arena, the princess thought, day and night, of nothing else but this great event. She had learned the secret of the doors. She knew behind which door waited the tiger, and behind which door stood the lady. She also knew the lady was one of the loveliest and most beautiful ladies in the land.
Now the great day finally arrived. A tall and handsome man stepped in. No wonder the princess loved him. What a terrible thing for him to be there!
