Meeting Your Personal Tutor /Adviser见导师 

        中英大学之间的一个主要区别是它们对班级(class)的概念理解不同。通常来说，一个中国大学包含几个学院( college /school)。一个学院可能再包含几个系(department)。一个系把它的学生分成年级(grade)。每个年级又有若干个班(class)。所以一个学生的身份可以被表述为“北京大学国际关系学院一年级五班的一员”。英国大学就不再把学生分成班了。你无非就是一个个体( individual)，每节课和你一起上课的同学都不一样。 
    这对中国学生来说可能是不适应的(shocking)。没有固定的班级，也就是没有班主任(headteacher)，没有班长(monitor)，也没有其他的学生干部，比如宣传(propaganda)委员和纪律(discipline)委员。 
        然而这并不表示你就无依无靠了。通常，你院系里的一位教职人员会被分配给你，作为你的导师(personal tutor/adviser)。导师的作用跟班主任差不多。不过他不带某一个特定的班。他跟你的关系是一对一的。personal tutor和研究生导师( supervisor)还不一样。supervisor一般只负责学术上的指导。 
personal tutor既可以给你提供学习上的指导，也可以跟你讨论你的社会和个人问题。即使你的personal tutor不能帮助你，他或她至少可以告诉你应当向谁求助。 
       你应该在见你的导师之前先通过电子邮件跟他预约。在学年开始的时候，跟你的导师探讨选课辜宜是非常重要的。让他看你的课程表(timetable)，看他是否认为你的安排是合理的。另外，你还可以跟他讨 
论你的职业计划(career plan)。总的来说，学生和导师之问的关系是非正式( informal)和个人化的(personal)。

Neil: Hello, could I speak to Dr. Foster, please? 
Dr. Foster: Speaking. 
Neil: Hello there, my name's Neil Zhao. I was told that you're my personal tutor. Is 
that right? 
Dr. Foster: Let me see... what did you say your name was, again? 
Neil: Zhao, Neil Zhao. Z-H-A-O. 
Dr. Foster: Ah yes, Mr. Zhao. What can I do for you? 
Neil: Well，I'd like to arrange to see you so that we can discuss my dissertation. 
Dr. Foster: Right. How does tomorrow morning at 9.30 sound to you? 
Neil: Er... OK, then. 
Dr. Foster: My office is on the third floor of the Eliot Building... room E332.

Dr. Foster: Oh, hello, Mr. Zhao... do come in... please sit down. 
Neil: Thanks. 
Dr. Foster: I hope you enjoyed our English weather this morning. 
Neil: To be honest, sir, I am not very impressed. 
Dr. Foster: Hehe... I don't blame you, Neil. It will get better soon... I hope. Now, 
it's the dissertation you wanted to talk about, right? So, tell me, which modules are 
you doing on this course... apart from the core ones? 
Neil:  I've  actually  chosen  EDUC5715M,  School  Management  and  Leadership, 
EDUC57tk1M, International Educational Management: Effective Development of Policies 
and Plans for Change, erm... let's see... EDUC5t137M, Citizenship Education: Principles 
and Practice,  and…EDUC6fi6bM, Public-Private Partnership in the Educational 
Marketplace... that's in addition to the compulsory modules... elm... Critical Approaches, 
Lifelong Learning, Fundamentals of Educational Management and... erm the dissertation. 
Dr. Foster: Some excellent choices there. As for the dissertation, do you have 
anything in mind? 
Neil: Well, I've been thinking about this for a while... I'm quite interested in looking 
at the organisational culture of Chinese middle schools compared to that of British 
secondary schools. 
Dr. Foster: Uuuhu…and what is it in particular that interests you? I mean…it sounds quite general.... 
Neil: Well, I'd like to look at the culture of leadership in Chinese and British 
education, do a comparative study.... 
Dr. Foster: That sounds very interesting. Have you read Deal and Peterson on 
leadership cultures? 
Neil: No, I haven't actually. 
Dr. Foster: Well, I'd recommend it. It's very interesting. OK…1 need you to 
prepare a short proposal for this. So, what you need to do is to write down a list of 
about twenty questions that spring to mind about leadership culture in Chinese 
education... then you can work out an overarching question that you want to use as the 
basis of your dissertation. Shall we meet again in two weeks' time?

尼尔:我选了EDUC5715M，学校管理和领导;EDUCS704M，国际教育管理:在变革中有效的发展政策与计划;嗯，让我想想，EDUC5037M.公民教育:原则与实践;还有…... EDUC6666iM，教育市场的公私合作……此外，我还学了批判性方法、终身教育、教育管理概论……那么.该说论文了。 
福斯特博士:选得很好。至于结业论文，你目前有什么想法吗? 
尼尔:嗯，我已经考虑一段时间了。我对研究中国的中学和英国的中学在组织文化上的差异比较感兴趣。
