中岳庙现存汉代—清代的古柏300多株，是生长着的“活文物”。其中汉柏40株，晋柏3株，南北朝柏24株，其余为唐、宋新植。大者数人围，小者亦2人围，是嵩山地区现存古柏最多的地方。据史料记载，宋太祖乾德二年（９６４年），河南地方官派两名军将监修中岳庙行廊１００多间，并将庙内及前分整划次序，遍植松柏。当时庙内已有古柏百余株，硕大俱数抱，“自东南来者，４０里外遥见苍蔚蟠薄、扶疏荫翳之气，欲喷云雾”。琉璃瓦闪烁其间，明霞璀璨，各种鸟类盘旋之上，更显阴深。入阁周游，始知离奇，或俯或伏，或屈或蟠，或怒或擢，或奋发欲飞，或鳞龙螺旋，或如帏幄之势，或如东盖三拥。加上近代植柏树千株，使中岳庙郁郁葱葱，绿波起伏。已形成“崇墉缭绕，屹若云连“的壮丽规模。
