Unit 8, Lesson A

Track 1-8-1

A.    Listen to Ramon and Lisa talking about jobs. Number the pictures from 1 to 4 as you listen.

Ramon: Hey, Lisa, what are you doing?

Lisa: Oh, hi, Ramon. I’m looking for a part-time job.

Ramon: Well, I work at the hospital. We need a nurse’s assistant.

Lisa: Oh, really?

Ramon: Yeah. The hours are from four to eight p.m., on Sundays and Mondays.

Lisa: Here’s another job. The Lucky Market needs a cashier on weekends from nine to three p.m.

Ramon: Look, Lisa. A doctor’s office needs a receptionist from nine to nine to noon, on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Lisa: Oh, here’s one! The Sunflower Café needs a waitress. The hours are from five to nine p.m., on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. This is a great job for me!

Anthony Price graduated from University of Chicago in May 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in East Asian Studies. When at university he was president of the Japanese Club from 2003 to 2004. From 2002 to 2003, he studied Japanese language, history and culture at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. Since 2004, he has been working as a part-time translator with WebTrans, a translating company based in Chicago, Illinois. He translates websites from English to Japanese. He also works as a part-time travel writer with One World Travel Magazine, a media company in Boston, Massachusetts. He does research and writes articles about different U.S. cities. He has worked as a volunteer teacher at Chicago Museum of Modern Art since May 2004. He teaches a 30- minute class once a week to visitors at the museum. His lectures feature the art of Japan.  Apart from the above work experience, Mr. Price has had other jobs. When he was a freshman, he worked as a cashier at the Pacific Market in Chicago. Mr. Price is a versatile young man. He can speak, read, and write Japanese and English fluently. He is also skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel. He can use both a PC and a Macintosh.

Kumiko: I teach Japanese to non-Japanese students. I like my job because it’s so much fun.

Julianna: I am a financial manager. I like my job because I like to work with numbers.

  Catherine: I like being a lawyer because I get to help people. I also like being a lawyer because you get to talk a lot and I like to talk. To be a lawyer you have to be very organized, hardworking, and also quick-thinking.

  Alejandra: I work as an international student advisor. I help international students at universities. I love my job because I meet a loft of interesting people.

Mike: Full-time…or part-time. I’m flexible.

Roberto: I see. What do you do now?

Mike: Well, I don’t have a job right now.

Roberto: (as himself) No, no, no. Don’t say that. Say “I’m between jobs.” Now…

Mike: (to himself) I’m between jobs…Ok. Yeah.

Roberto: (imitating interviewer) Tell me about yourself. What are you like?

Mike: Well, I’m smart, and creative…

Roberto: (as himself) That’s good! That’s good! Sell yourself! Tell them about your good points!

Mike: OK. And I’m funny and outgoing…definitely not shy.

Roberto: That’s great. (imitating interviewer) OK. What languages do you speak?

Mike: I speak Spanish, but I can’t write it very well.

Roberto: OK. What else can you do?

Mike: I can use PCs and Macs.

Roberto: (as himself) That’s great, get excited!

Mike: And I’m very hardworking…and I know I can get this job!

Roberto: That’s right! Now go get’em! Hey, by the way, what kind of job interview is this?

Mike: It’s a job for a lifeguard down at the city pool.
