“I like to create a space for discovery, a
first
moment where you capture what is obvious in the
piece, where you can consume it in the first instant.
But as you come closer, you discover there's more
to it and you start to deconstruct it.”
Joana Vasconcelos

Natasha Howes. Exhibition Curator

The Battle of hard and soft”

Weave your way around the atrium floors to explore Britannia, a giant, soft sculpture. Take your time to work you way around it to look at it from different angles.

Studios
Head back down to the studios and be prepared to do battle in the war between hard and soft materials.
Will the soft material wrap, swallow and smother the hard, or will the hardened tools pierce and pummel their way through?
Work your way around a soft, squidgy, salty landscape in the first studio. Next, decide whether you'd prefer to slide with the soft or hang out with the hard in the second.

“ Her work can be seen as a critique of
contemporary society, destabilising traditional
views of female sexuality, the status of women and
consumer culture. She plays with dichotomies of
hand-crafted/industrial, private/public,
tradition/modernity and popular/elite culture.”

Over the next 3 months
we'll be exploring the work of Joana Vasconcelos. We'll take one
theme as a starting point and continue to explore this over
February, March and April. We hope this will give you the chance to
develop the theme at home and bring back new experiences and ideas
to the session.Gallery
