A Letter to a Schoolmate

Dear Xiao Wang,

Learning that you are going to visit me during the week-long holiday, I was so happy that I couldn’t wait a minute to share the good news with my patents. They are also very eager to see you. I am sure you will find your stay enjoyable.

The scenery of my home town is beautiful. The first thing we may do after your arrival is to go to the woods in the morning, with is as lovely and peaceful as the Vienna woods we’ve seen in the film The Great Waltz. With birds singing, we’ll have a leisurely walk in the woods.

My hometown is located in a mountainous area and we will certainly not miss mountain-climbing during the holiday. The mountains here are all covered with trees of different kinds and are worth touring. There is no doubt that we’ll have a real picnic there.

After that, we can go fishing and swimming in a river, which is not far away from my home. It would be very delightful to sit at a tranquil country river bank with our feet dangling into the cool water in such hot summer days.

Phone me before you set off and let me know exactly when you will get here. I will meet you at the station.

My bet wishes to you and your family.

                                                     Yours truly

Directions: Some people believe that private cars should be encouraged in China. Others argue that private cars should be discouraged in China. There has been a controversy recently on the issue in a newspaper in China. Write a letter to the newspaper’s editor to

  1. state the present situation of private cars in China

  2. offer reasons for or against owning private cars

  3. give your own opinion on the issue

Write a letter of about 200 words within 40 minutes. Your letter must be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m writing to you to express my willingness to take part in the controversy on private cars and advance my views.

With the living standards rising rapidly, more and more Chinese people have cars of their own. Statistics show that in Beijing alone, there are 1620,000 cars, among which private cars add up to (=number) 560,000. the increase in the number of cars brings about a lot of problems, such as air pollution, noise and traffic congestion. Then a controversy arises: whether private cars should be encouraged in China? People differ in their ideas about it.

Many people are against owning cars. According to them, private cars have to be limited in China. The reasons for it are obvious. To begin with, cars contribute to air pollution. A lot of big cities in China are now plagued by serious air pollution. If people are to have cars of their own, the already contaminated atmosphere will get even dirtier. Secondly, private cars can be a dire threat to the already terrible traffic in China. If more cars are allowed onto busy streets, more traffic jams will happen, which is really a public hazard to all of us. Finally, cars consume a large amunt of fuel. Though China is rich in its oil resources, they are running out rapidly. All these facts allow of only one solution: to limit the ever growing number of cars.

In my opinion, private cars should be discouraged in China. To leave clean air, wide and safe roads and abundant energy resources to our descendants, we have to say “No” to private cars. As far as the great demand for means of transport is concerned, we can develop mass transit to take the place of private cars. In short, China does not need private cars.

If you require any further comment on the issue, please don’t hesitate to call me up. My home number is 66661818.

Thanks.

                                                      Yours sincerely,

                                                      Wang Hua

Directions: Study the following graphs carefully and write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes. Your essay must meet the requirements below.

1.      Write out the message conveyed by the graph.

2.      Make an analysis of the strange phenomenon

3.      Give your comments

As is shown by the two graphs above, the average price of eggs was on the rise from 1990 to 1995 and the demand for them increased correspondingly. The graphs also indicate that during the period from 1995 to 2000 the price eggs declined, and so did the demand. The phenomenon is quite strange and worth studying. According to the law of market economy, the increase in demand results in higher prices. That is to say, when prices climb, the demand decreases, and when prices fall, the demand grows. Now the reality was just the other way round.

The reasons for this strange phenomenon are obvious. During the period from 1990 to 1995 with the development of our socialist market economy people’s income, bonus and different kinds of benefits, increased rapidly. Though the price of eggs rose gradually, the demand for them grew sharply, too. On the other hand, when the demand for eggs reached a certain point, it stopped rising because people began to spend more and more money on clothing, recreations and tours round the country and even round the world. It is generally assumed that the expenses for tours accounted for a great part of the total consumption of the people in our country from 1995 to 2000. As a result, it seemed reasonable that the demand for eggs declined during the same period of time.

As far as I’m concerned, with the domestic poultry farming continuing to develop, the price of eggs is likely to decline because the demand for them is limited and the fall in consumption of them is also inevitable.  (270 words)

Directions : In this part, you are to write an essay on “Opportunity and Success “. You should write about 200 words within 40 minutes on ANSWER SHEET2. Your essay should be based on the following outline:

1.      Contingency (偶然性) of opportunity

2.      Relationship Between opportunity and success

3.      My view on opportunity

Opportunities don’t come often. They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed. Therefore, it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care.

When an opportunity presents itself, it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you want to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitions you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you. It is clear that in order to be highly qualified for out future jobs, we should make every possible preparation.

The difference between a man who succeeds and one who does not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes adequate preparations to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by. Obviously, the two different attitudes towards opportunities may lead to quite different consequences.

In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, in our society, but only those who are prepared adequately and qualified highly can make use of them to achieve their purpose.    (208 words )

Directions:

A. Title: Air Travel

B. Time limit: 40 minutes

C. Word limit: about 200 words

D. Your essay should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2.

E. Your essay should be based on the information given below.

(Composition for reference only )

Many people prefer to travel by air. This is because air travel has some advantages. In the first place, airplane, the miracle created by man, is the fastest means of transport. It takes the least time for one to travel by air from one place to another. Secondly, traveling by air is convenient and comfortable. Friendly air hostesses are affectionate and considerate. They look after passengers all the way to their destinations. Moreover, on long distance flights there are films and music for people to entertain themselves.

As a popular saying goes, “Everything has two sides.” The same is true of air travel. It has some disadvantages, too. For one thing, air travel costs a great deal. The average Chinese are not rich enough to afford expensive air fares. So they prefer to take trains, which save a lot of money. For another, although passengers are assured of their safety, they are still worried about it during the journey because flying always involves more or less risk.

As far I am concerned, the advantage mentioned above exceed the disadvantages. If I were given choice between traveling by train, I would certainly prefer the former. For me, time is money and it is the most important thing I have to take into consideration whatever I do. (216 words)
