何谓“赤道（equator）?

如果光看汉语的“赤道”，可能有很多朋友不能准确说出其真正含义：

赤道是地球表面的点随地球自转产生的轨迹中周长最长的圆周线，长40,075.02公里。如果把地球看做一个绝对的球体的话，赤道距离南北两极相等。它把地球分为南北两半球，其以北是北半球，以南是南半球，是划分纬度的基线，赤道的纬度为0°。

如果能掌握equator这个单词，相信可以帮助您更轻松地搞清楚什么叫“赤道”：

-or, -er多数是名词后缀，表“~者，～物”

equate[i5kweit]vt.使相等, [数]视为平等(equ+ate)

-ate动词后缀，ate是动词eat的过去式。

equal[5i:kwEl]adj.相等的, 均等的（equ+al）

也就是说，equator, equate, equal这几个单词我们实际上需要重点记忆的只是equ这部分：

equ源自拉丁语aequus [相同的，相等的]

拉丁语中 的ae进入英语多数会改写为e，如拉丁语的前缀prae-进入英语多数会写为pre-：

pre-在前：早先；在…之前；先于…

position表“位置”，由posit（安置）后加名词后缀-ion构成。

也就是说，您只要掌握了posit也就一定可以轻松掌握position。当您熟悉了position，再在前面加上前缀pre-就是preposition，根本用不着“背”！请顺便复习一下composition:

com-是前缀con-用在b,p,m前的变化，目的是为了发音方便。

英语中有一个常见的名词后缀-ation，由动词后缀-ate去掉不发音的e再加上-ion构成。

所以，当您熟悉了equate，也就肯定不用再背equation：

我认为：把equation分解成e,q,u,a,t,i,o,n的人朋友至少30年无法真正解决单词问题，最大的可能是终身都无法入门。
