Stacey Kramer: The best gift I ever
survived
Summary
The hostess is a previous patient who has suffered from a
brain tumor. She regarded this experience as a gift, saying "I
wouldn't wish this gift for you. I'm not sure if you'd want it. But
it wouldn't change my experience. It profoundly altered my life in
ways it didn't expect. When you're faced with something that's
unexpected, unwanted and uncertain, consider that it just may be a
gift."

3. 2014-01-22 Shane Koyczan: To This Day ...
for the bullied and beautiful
Summary
We are being told that we somehow must be what we are not,
sacrificing what we are to inherit the masquerade of what we will
be. We are being told to accept the identity that others will give
us. Some of us fell, but all of this is just debris left over when
we finally decide to smash all the things we thought we used to be.
If you can't see anything beautiful about
yourself, get a better mirror, look a little closer and stare a
little longer because there's something inside you that
made you keep trying despite everyone who told you to quit. We grew
up to cheer on the underdog because we see ourselves in them.
4. 2014-01-24 Joshua Foer: Feats of memory
anyone can do
Summary
The entire art of what is going on while memorizing and the
entire art of remembering stuff better in everyday life is to take
information that is lacking in context, in significance, in meaning
and transform it in some way so that it becomes meaningful in the
light of all the other things that you have in your mind. We have
exceptional visual and spatial memories.
The idea behind the memory
palace is to create this imagined edifice in your mind's
eye and populate it with images of the things that you want to
remember. Great memories are not initial but learned.
Our lives are the sum of our memories. We aren't willing to
lose any of ourselves by playing with cellphones, by not paying
attention to the human being taking with us, by being so lazy that
we're not willing to process deeply. If
you want to live a memorable life, you have to be that kind of
person who remembers to remember.
话说Memory
5. 2014-01-24 Derek Sivers: Keep your goals to yourself
Summary
The good feeling when you tell people what your personal goal is
will make you less likely to do it, because the mind is tricked
into feeling that it's already done. You feel the satisfaction and
you're less motivated to do the actual hard work necessary.
Next time you're attempted to tell
someone your goal, remain silent.
6. 2014-01-24 Charmian Gooch: Meet global corruption's hidden
players
Summary
Corruption is driven by our international banking system, by the
problem of anomymous shell companies, by the secrecy that we have
afforded big oil, gas and mining operations, by the failure of our
politicians to back up their rhetoric and do something really
meaningful and systemic to tackle this stuff. In a globalized
world, corruption is a truly globalized business, and one that
needs global solutions supported and pushed by us all, as global
citizens.
7. 2014-01-27 Jacqueline Novogratz: Inspiring a life of
immersion
Summary
We have it all wrong when we think that income is the link.
What we really yearn for as human beings is to be visible to each
other. We face huge issues as a world - the financial crisis, the
global warming, and the growing sense of fear and otherness. Every
day we have a choice - we can take the easier road, so-called
cynical road, or the much more difficult path with transformation,
transcendence, compassion, love and also accountability and
justice.
8. 2014-01-27 Scott Fraser: Why eyewitnesses get it wrong

Summary
The brain abhors a vacuum! Under the best of observation
conditions, we only detect, encode and store in our brains bits and
pieces of the entire experience in front of us, and they're stored
in different parts of the brain. When it's important for us to be
able to recall what it was that we experienced, we have an
incomplete and partial store. With no requirement for any kind of
motivated processing, the brain fills in information that was not
there. It's called reconstructed memories.
Suggestion:
(1) All of us become much more attuned to the necessity to get more
science in the courtroom. For anyone going into the law, they
should learn science, technology, engineering and mathematics,
because they become the judges.
(2) We all need to remember to be cautious that the accuracy of our
memories is not measured in how vivid they are nor how certain you
are that they're correct.
9. 2014-01-28 Rebecca Saxe: How we read each other's minds
Summary
We have a special brain system that let us think about what
other people are thinking. This system takes a long time to
develop, slowly throughout the course of childhood, and into early
adolescence. Even in adulthood, differences in this brain region
can explain differences among adults in how we think about and
judge other people.
10. 2014-01-28 Tyler DeWitt: Hey science teachers -- make it
fun
Summary
Details are important when making scientific communication
between experts, but they're not when we're trying to teach middle
school students. If a young learner thinks that all viruses have
DNA, that's not going to ruin their chances of success in science.
But if a young learner can't understand anything in science and
learns to hate it because the descriptions in text books are so
complex and detailed, their chances of success will be ruined.
11. 2014-02-07 Adora Svitak: What adults can
learn from kids

Summary
No matter your position of place in life, it is imperative to
create opportunities for children so that they grow up to blow
adults away. Adults need to listen and learn from kids and trust
them and expect more from them. "You must lend an ear today,
because we are the leaders of tomorrow."
12. 2014-02-07 Sheryl Sandberg: Why we have too few women
leaders
Summary
If a woman do want to stay in the workforce, she has to:
(1) Sit at the table: Don't be nervous and sit at the corner
when having a meeting because you'll lose opportunities;
(2) Make your partner a real partner;
(3) Don't leave until you leave: Don't make decisions far to in
advance, particularly ones you're not even conscious you're
making.
13. 2014-02-09 Cesar Kuriyama: One second
every day
Summary
Recording that one second on a really bad day is extremely
difficult. We tend to take our cameras out when we're doing awesome
things but we rarely do that when we're having a bad day when
something horrible is happening. It's actually very important to
record even just one second of a really bad moment. It helps you
appreciate the good times.
14. 2014-02-09 Graham Hill: Less stuff, more
happiness
Summary
Less stuff, less space equals a smaller CO2 footprint. It's
also a great way to save you some money and give you a little more
ease in your life.
Step 1. Edit ruthlessly: We've got to cut the extraneous out
of our lives, and we've got to learn to stem the inflow.
Step 2. Think small: We want space efficiency. We want things
that are designed for how they're used for the vast majority of the
time.
Step 3. Make multifunctional.
15. 2015-02-09 James Randi: Homeopathy,
quackery and fraud

Summary
The business of believing in the paranormal and the occult is
a big problem that something should be done about that, and it all
lies in education. Largely it's the media who are to blame for this
sort of things. They shamelessly promote all kind of this because
it pleases the sponsors.
