Although rapid urbanization creates opportunities for young people, it brings various challenges for them as well. This essay will analyze the problems faced by the youth and also put forward some proposals to deal with these issues.

The fast-paced urban life causes immense pressure for young people. First, with the population continue growing in cities, competition for decent jobs is keen and young people are obliged to spend the vast majority of their time at work. Working overtime and commuting devour too much of their daily time, leaving them no chance for family bonding. Having no time to cook, they eat unhealthy fast foods. Being too busy to exercise, they lead a sedentary life that can be damaging to their physical posture. All of these can make young people suffer both physically and psychologically. Another difficulty for the young residents is the soaring costs of living. In metropolitans like London and New York where the property prices are skyrocketing, many young people cannot afford an apartment and they have to spend a large portion of the salary on the rent. Once the young lose their jobs and the source of income to support themselves, they tend to resort to illegal means like robbery or turn to drugs. It is a fact that when the unemployment rate of young people rises, the rate of youth crimes increases.

To tackle these problems requires concerted efforts of both individual and the society. First, young people should relentlessly improve themselves so that they can be more competitive in the job market. Since nowadays competition is getting fierce in every aspect of life, the young should face the reality and get prepared for the challenges. They should be advised to lower unrealistic expectations and embark on some seemingly more fundamental work. Second, the local communities are also supposed to play an active role. For example, in US, regular job skills workshops and entrepreneurship training are provided in public libraries. Also, preferential policies in the areas of taxation and credit should be made by the governments to support the young graduates to start their own business.

In conclusion, it is true that young people in major cities are facing numerous challenges. However, these problems can be addressed as long as young people are ready to make changes and the governments take measure to encourage them to get employed or self-employed.(By Amy)
