There has long been a controversy among the public whether it is justified to use animals in medical research for the good of human beings. In my point of view, using animals for research of advanced medicines and therapies in this era when new infectious diseases constantly appear certainly has significant meaning and this trend will continue in the future.

Some animal-right advocators might argue that it is too cruel to see little animals like hamsters and rats suffering from chemical experiments in the laboratory where some of them might even die from the pain. These active protectionists appeal that animals, like us human beings, should enjoy equal right to live in the world. Therefore animal experiment is an abuse of animal life and an obvious violation of the basic right of subsistence. Besides, frequent reporting on individual researcher’s brutal treatment to their subjects is another cause of opposition. In this case, many people might believe that this right can be easily abused and hence animal experiments should be banned due to its immorality and cruelty. 

Despite enormous objection and criticism, there are still multiple reasons for using animals to conduct medical research. To begin with, most of these experiments are for the interest of human beings and scientists attribute medical advances to the animals which make substantial contributions to the experiment. Researchers conduct animal-based experiments to explore new therapies and medicines, which significantly lowers the risks of trial use on people. Compared with those illegal murder and brutal slaughter of endangered animals to satisfy greedy appetite, the medical use is more justifiable. Moreover, up to now no better substitutes which can provide the same property of animals can be found for medical use. And in laboratories rules and regulations on limitation of pain and suffering of experimental animals have already been introduced and strictly followed.

To sum up, despite the fact that we still need to sacrifice animals for the benefits of humans, there is no denying that animals, particularly those for medical use, deserve better care and treatment.
