Task2: When designing a building, the most important thing to take into account is the intended use of the building rather than its outward appearance. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It
is more important for a building to serve a purpose than to look
beautiful. Architects shouldn’t worry about producing building as a
work of art. Do you agree or
disagree?

When it comes to the design of a building, some people always believe that the function should be given the priority while the shape or appearance does not matter very much. Personally, I do not agree with this viewpoint.
Admittedly, there are multiple reasons why modern people attach more importance to the piratical use of buildings. Apart from basic shelter needs such as high level of ventilation, sufficient exposure to sunlight and efficient sewage system, safety is another vital factor taken into account by both designers and residents. For example, compared with houses made of mud and bricks in the past, apartments which consist of concrete and steel have sounder foundations and therefore are more likely to survive in natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes. Moreover, these days edifices and mansions constructed with Eco-friendly materials are becoming increasingly popular among city-dwellers, as they not only have an edge in terms of noise abatement, but also possess great potential of energy saving in the long run.
However, this does not mean that outward appearance does not deserve consideration when planning or designing new buildings and to some extent the artistic value of buildings brings numerous benefits for local people. To begin with, nowadays in many metropolises, newly-built skyscrapers or ordinary residences are required to meet the municipal city plan in order to maintain unique image of the whole city. Over the years, some of them which are carefully preserved might acquire unique artistic value and represent the cultural identity of the local area. In addition, some attractively-designed buildings can have a strong appeal to tourists, thereby boosting the economic development by increasing the tourism income. For instance, visitors in a city of China might have an opportunity to appreciate buildings of European architectural interest, in the same way; architecture with Chinese elements in Los Angeles can also fascinate groups of tourists from China.
In conclusion, I believe that the
intended use of buildings will still be an essential factor when
new buildings are designed or constructed in the future, but the
exterior appearance should also be taken into account in this
fast-changing society where artistic value is highly thought
of.
