约瑟夫·鲁德亚德·吉卜林（Joseph Rudyard Kipling，1865～1936）英国小说家、诗人，代表作品有诗集《机关打油诗》、《营房谣》、《七海》；短篇小说集《山的故事》、《三个士兵》、《生命的阻力》、《丛林之书》；长篇小说《消失的光芒》、《基姆》等。1907年作品《老虎！老虎！》获诺贝尔文学奖 。获奖理由： “这位世界名作家的作品以观察入微、想象独特、气概雄浑、叙述卓越见长”。

《如果》是一首拉迪亚德吉卜林写给12岁儿子的励志诗，曾被译成27国语言作为学习的教材，许多人特别是青少年常以此勉励自己，激发前进的动力。如今吉卜林的《如果》成了迈克·杰克逊的墓志铭。

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
