       他是诗、书、画、印四绝的著名艺术家。其画清新朴茂、笔墨简练、格调隽逸，在现代花鸟画坛上独树一帜。书法拙中寓巧，草书和隶篆最为人称道。他一生正直耿介、低调缄言，甚至给自己刻了一方自用印，叫“闷胡庐主”。

来楚生

（1903—1975），原名稷，号然犀。浙江萧山人，出生于武昌。中国美术家协会会员。曾任美协上海分会理事，上海书法篆刻研究会常务理事，西泠印社副社长。

1 ． 结识潘天寿，亦师亦友

       来楚生少时归里读小学，受环境熏陶，已嗜书画文学，於杭州宗文中学毕业後，继母欲使进北京大学习法律，因祖父逝世耽搁不果，改入上海美术专科学校学国画，得偿所愿。

       1921年，来楚生考入上海美术专科学校在上海艺专，结识了大他六岁的潘天寿，且终身保持着亦师亦友的关系。他们志趣相投，时常探讨画学艺理，来楚生的绘画、书法也深受潘天寿影响。据西泠印社副社长童衍方回忆，潘天寿每次去上海，固定的落脚点便是来楚生家。潘天寿的夫人何愔与来楚生的夫人赵履真也亲如姐妹。

2 ． 不迎合大众

       1924年毕业后在杭州与潘天寿、姜丹书、唐云等人组织莼社从事书画活动。1937年移居上海，组织东南书画社，曾任上海美术专科学校及新华艺术专科学校教师。

       上世纪三十年代，他拙朴浑厚的画风与当时上海滩娟秀的审美趣味格格不入，所以日子也过得十分清贫。即便如此，他也从未想过改变自己的艺术风格以谋求更好的出路。早年他的一方朱文印印款便刻着：“余画多水墨，不喜施脂粉，以迎合时凉也。”可见一斑。

       和所有书画兼擅的艺术家一样，来楚生对于毛笔的掌控可谓炉火纯青。来楚生是吴昌硕最得意的弟子。他承续的是吴昌硕书、画、印兼修的传统，他在三方面的修养甚为齐平，是师法吴昌硕诸人中取得较大突破的一位。

3 ．他对学生说

       生前，来楚生曾对学生们说过一句话：“艺术，要让后人来说话。”

       时至今日，在《辞海》的艺术家条目和《中国大百科全书·美术卷》中，都找不到“来楚生”的名字。

       上世纪八十年代，国内相继出版了《来楚生法书集》、《来楚生印谱》、《来楚生印存》等专著，其在书画篆刻界的领衔地位才渐渐被重新发现、强调。再到最近三五年，关于来楚生艺术研究的最新成果也越来越多见，亦有学者对来楚生创作思想等进行学术研讨，举办关于来楚生的专题展览。
